Texas lawmakers are back at the state capitol for the start of a special session, which will see them consider an agenda set by Gov. Greg Abbott.

That agenda outlines 18 areas the governor is calling lawmakers back to to tackle. Among the most pressing: legislation in response to the deadly July 4 floods in the hill country and redrawing the state’s congressional districts – which President Donald Trump has asked for.
Also on the list is regulating so-called “hemp-derived products.” During the regular session, Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick pushed for an all-out ban on the goods that offer a marijuana-like high. But Abbott vetoed that bill – and wants lawmakers to figure out how to regulate the products without quote “banning a lawful agricultural commodity.”
Lawmakers will have 30 days to address these items and others put forward by the governor.

The space-tourism company Blue Origin has announced its next crewed flight.
The company, which launches its rockets from a facility north of Van Horn, said earlier today (MONDAY) that the next flight will be its 14th flight with people on board – and 34th overall. The flight will take a six-person crew about 62 miles above Earth’s surface. That distance is known as the Kármán line, and is considered to be the boundary where Earth ends and space begins.
The company expects to announce the flight date soon.

Starting tomorrow (TUESDAY), the Small Business Development Center at Sul Ross State University in Alpine will host a few training sessions on improving your business.
The first training is a beginner’s guide to using AI features in Canva – that will be July 22 from 11 a .m. to noon. This session will introduce the basics of Canva’s built-in AI features, including tools for generating text, creating graphics, and streamlining content creation.
In the next training, on July 23, learn how your business can be found online with Google. This workshop explains how Google Search works and how you can improve a website’s visibility with search engine optimization. It will be from 11 a.m. to noon.
The last training next week will be July 24, from 9:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. In this session, you’ll discover how to craft a strategic hiring process that attracts the right talent for your organization.

The deadline to submit your works to the Big Bend Arts Council’s next show is coming up.
The artwork must be original, handcrafted by the artist and consist of at least 75% fired clay. Artists have until July 29 to submit up to three pieces. Other rules for submission say the artwork must have been completed within the last two years.
A reception for the event is Friday, August 1.

Registration is now open for the next Texas Master Naturalist program.
The first session for new members will be next month – on Saturday, August 23, at the Chihuahuan Desert Nature Center. The first class will focus on understanding the geological and biological events that have resulted in the Big Bend ecosystems we see today.

Life Drawing is returning to the CreateSpace Art Studios in Alpine, the first Thursday of each month.
The first session will be on August 7 from 6:45 p.m. to 9 at 102 N 8th Street Alpine.
Easels, paper and charcoal will be provided. But if you have materials you like to work on, you can bring those. The classes are donation based, and the art studios ask for a $20 donation for each session. But if you are unable to donate, you are still welcomed – and the studios offer a barter system: you can sweep the floor or stack chairs, empty the garbage or help in some other way.
CreateSpace also rents studio space for committed artists at $100 per month.

Los legisladores de Texas regresan al capitolio estatal para el inicio de una sesión especial, donde considerarán la agenda establecida por el gobernador Greg Abbott.
Esta agenda describe 18 áreas que el gobernador está convocando a los legisladores para que aborden. La compañía de turismo espacial Blue Origin ha anunciado su próximo vuelo tripulado.
La compañía, que lanza sus cohetes desde unas instalaciones al norte de Van Horn, anunció hoy que este será su decimocuarto vuelo con personas a bordo, y el trigésimo cuarto en total. El vuelo llevará a una tripulación de seis personas a unos 100 kilómetros sobre la superficie terrestre. Esta distancia se conoce como la línea de Kármán y se considera el límite entre la Tierra y el espacio.

A partir de mañana, el Centro de Desarrollo de Pequeñas Empresas de la Universidad Estatal Sul Ross en Alpine ofrecerá varias sesiones de capacitación sobre cómo mejorar su negocio.
La primera capacitación es una guía para principiantes sobre el uso de las funciones de IA en Canva, que se realizará el 22 de julio de 11:00 a. m. a mediodía. Se acerca la fecha límite para enviar sus obras a la próxima exposición del Consejo de Artes de Big Bend.
La obra debe ser original, hecha a mano por el artista y compuesta al menos en un 75 % de arcilla cocida. Los artistas tienen hasta el 29 de julio para enviar hasta tres piezas. Otras reglas de envío indican que la obra debe haberse realizado en los últimos dos años.
La recepción para el evento tendrá lugar el viernes 1ro de agosto.

Dibujo al natural regresa a los Estudios de Arte CreateSpace en Alpine el primer jueves de cada mes.
La primera sesión será el 7 de agosto, de 6:45 a 9, en 102 N 8th Street, Alpine.
Se proporcionarán caballetes, papel y carboncillo. Si tiene materiales que te gusten, puede traerlos. Las clases se basan en donaciones, y los estudios de arte piden una donación de $20 por sesión. Si no puede donar, aun es bienvenido. Los estudios ofrecen un sistema de intercambio: puede barrer el suelo, apilar sillas, vaciar la basura o ayudar de alguna otra manera.
