The Alpine City Council meets tomorrow, and among other things, city leaders are set to receive department updates and reports from the mayor and city manager.
The council’s also set to approve the job descriptions for several positions with the city, including an assistant to the city manager and grant writer.
The council will also discuss the city’s outdoor lighting ordinance, which is more commonly referred to as the “dark sky ordinance.” Councilmembers will discuss the next steps of implementing the ordinance, communication around it and enforcement.
City council meets Tuesday, July 15 at 5:30 at 803 W. Holland Avenue.

Texas Governor Greg Abott has outlined his 18-item agenda for the upcoming special legislative session that’s set to begin next week.
Among the top priorities is legislation to improve early warning systems in flood-prone areas throughout Texas. In a press release, Abbott said there is QUOTE “more work to be done particularly in the aftermath of the devastating floods in the Texxas Hill Country.”

The Small Business Development Center at Sul Ross State University in Alpine will host a one-day training on emergency preparedness this week.
On Wednesday, July 16, from 10 to 11 a.m., learn how to prepare for any event that could impact your business, from workplace disruptions to natural and man-made disasters. This session discusses the areas critical to protecting your business, employees, and the community, as well as resources to develop your own business continuity plan.

Later this week, the National Parks Conservation Association will unveil the Blackwell Blueprint, a document outlining the future for Blackwell School National Historic Site in Marfa.
The document came together over the last several months through a series of community discussions centered on the historic site. Blackwell was one of many segregated schools across the southwest where Hispanic and white children were taught separately.
The event will take place Saturday, July 19 at the USO Building in Marfa from 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m.

The Sul Ross Ag and rodeo annual fundraiser and reunion will be this weekend – from July 18 to the 20th.
The events kick off Friday with a 42 tournament at1 p.m. at Skelton’s Runway, located at 300 S. Cockrell St. in Alpine. That day there will also be a social, goat roping and corn hole.
The reunion continues on Saturday with team roping at the SALE Arena, a poker tournament and an award presentation and silent auction, from 6 to 9 p.m. at Sul Ross.
The final day of the annual celebration features a golf tournament and a playday.

Next month, the Chihuahuan Desert Research Institute will hold its annual BBQ and auction fundraiser.
The event happens Saturday, August 9 at the Chihuahuan Desert Nature Center and Botanical Gardens. Doors open at 3:45 followed by a live and silent auction, a BBQ dinner and live music.
