Helen Louise Schneider will be remembered by friends and family this weekend with a memorial service at Holy Angels Cemetery.
Helen was an avid reader, loved movies, and was a big sports fan. She was a gracious host who loved family and friends coming together. She is survived by her husband, her two children, three grandchildren and four siblings.
Helen’s memorial service will be Saturday, July 12 at 10 a.m. at Holy Angel Cemetery.

While a select number of cattle crossings were set to reopen on the U.S-Mexico border, the USDA has just re-ordered the closure of livestock trade through all southern ports out of concern for the New World screwworm, a parasitic fly.
In a press release, the agency said there’s been a new reported case of a screwworm infection just 370 miles south of the border – which is closer than previously detected cases.
The screwworm, which embeds its larvae into the living flesh of animals and humans, wreaked havoc on the state decades ago. It’s unclear just how long the current closure will last.

Tomorrow (FRIDAY), health officials and local leaders will host a ribbon-cutting ceremony for a new community health clinic in Fort Davis.
The medical care facility is a 40-foot retrofitted shipping container. It came together through a partnership between Jeff Davis County, Texas Tech and Texas A&M.
In an interview with KVLF, Dr. Adrian Billings said the clinic is a way to address the rural healthcare crisis.
BILLINGS1: “ And so we are hopeful we can prove to the state legislature that this collaborative model works, that it improves access to care in these rural and frontier areas. And perhaps we can then replicate this in other rural and frontier areas in Texas.” (0:17)
Billings says, starting likely in August, the clinic will be open two days out of the week, offering tele-health services. But the goal is to expand that to a full week. He says the groups are also looking to work with the local healthcare workforce.
BILLINGS2: “Many hands make a great task small. And it really takes many different institutions, collaborating together, to provide access to care in these rural and frontier areas.”
While the clinic is in Fort Davis, Billings says it’s open to all residents in the Big Bend.
The clinic’s grand opening will be Friday, July 11 at 2:00 p.m. at 100 Court Avenue

The Brewster County Groundwater Conservation District holds its regular meeting next week.
Among other items on the agenda is a discussion and potential action related to newly ordered monitoring equipment.
The conservation district, which manages groundwater resources in the county, meets on Thursday, July 17 at 8 a.m.

Si bien se reabrirían algunos cruces de ganado en la frontera entre Estados Unidos y México, el USDA acaba de reordenar el cierre del comercio de ganado en todos los puertos del sur debido a la preocupación por el gusano barrenador del Nuevo Mundo, una mosca parásita.
En un comunicado de prensa, la agencia informó que se ha reportado un nuevo caso de infección por gusano barrenador a solo 600 kilómetros al sur de la frontera, una distancia menor a la detectada anteriormente.
El gusano barrenador, que incrusta sus larvas en la carne viva de animales y humanos, causó estragos en el estado hace décadas. No se sabe con certeza cuánto durará el cierre actual.

Mañana (viernes), funcionarios de salud y líderes locales celebrarán la ceremonia de inauguración de una nueva clínica de salud comunitaria en Fort Davis.
El centro de atención médica es un contenedor de carga reacondicionado de 12 metros. Se creó gracias a una colaboración entre el condado de Jeff Davis, Texas Tech y Texas A&M.
En una entrevista con KVLF, el Dr. Adrian Billings afirmó que la clínica es una forma de abordar la crisis de salud rural.
Menciono que esperan poder demostrar a la legislatura estatal que este modelo colaborativo funciona y que mejora el acceso a la atención médica en estas zonas rurales y fronterizas. Y quizás puedan replicarlo en otras zonas rurales y fronterizas de Texas”.
Billings afirma que, probablemente a partir de agosto, la clínica abrirá dos días a la semana, ofreciendo servicios de telesalud. Pero el objetivo es ampliarlo a una semana completa. Añadió que los grupos también buscan colaborar con el personal sanitario local.

Si bien la clínica se encuentra en Fort Davis, Billings afirma que está abierta a todos los residentes de Big Bend.
