Anthony Willis Green – a caring son, husband, father, grandfather, brother and friend – has died after a courageous battle with cancer. He was 79 years old.
Tony, as he was called, was born in Uvalde, but spent most of his time growing up in the Big Bend area – first at the national park where his father worked, then in Presidio and Alpine, where he eventually met and married the love of his life, Mary Nell Wylie Green, while attending Sul Ross State University.
After graduating from Sul Ross, Tony and Mary moved to Uvalde, where he began a 27-year career as a high school biology teacher. He retired in 2000, and he and Mary moved back to Alpine, where they enjoyed outdoor adventures along the Rio Grande and many trips with family and friends.
Tony and Mary were married for more than 50 years before she passed away in 2021. Tony is survived by his two children, five grandchildren, and many nieces, nephews, and friends.
A graveside service will be scheduled at a later date at the Elm Grove Cemetery in Alpine. In lieu of flowers, the family would appreciate donations to Jethro Homeward Bound Pets.

The Alpine City Council voted unanimously last night to rename several streets on the Sul Ross campus.
The move is part of a years-long effort to improve addressing across the tri-county area.
Kayse Muratori is overseeing the initiative. She told council members that the change will help streamline emergency responses.
MURATORI1: “While it’s true that our UPD certainly understands these locations, right? They know where they’re going. They know what it’s called. If there was a larger incident and we had to bring in additional agencies, this information is crucial for them to also understand that location.” (0:14)
Muratori said part of what took so long to make the change was getting approval from the university.

The city of Alpine has been named one of just six cities in the state to participate in a Smithsonian traveling exhibit that tells the stories of intrepid Americans in small towns across the nation, past and present.
According to a press release, the Texas Historical Commission will work with the city and other selected rural communities in Texas as they embark on nearly two years of training and preparation to host the Smithsonian.

Due to the measles outbreak in West Texas, Big Bend Regional Medical Center is once again implementing precautionary measures at the hospital.
Hospital officials say they have a greeter who will ask about your vaccine status and offer a mask. If you’re unvaccinated or unsure about your vaccination status, the hospital encourages you to wear a mask while in the facility, whether you’re seeking treatment or visiting a patient.
If you have been exposed to someone with measles or suspect you may have measles, you can call either the emergency room at 432-837-0209 or the clinic at 432-837-0430 before entering the building so precautions can be taken.

Anthony Willis Green, un cariñoso hijo, esposo, padre, abuelo, hermano y amigo, falleció tras una valiente batalla contra el cáncer. Tenía 79 años.
Tony, como lo llamaban, nació en Uvalde, pero pasó la mayor parte de su infancia en la zona de Big Bend: primero en el parque nacional donde trabajaba su padre, luego en Presidio y Alpine, donde finalmente conoció y se casó con el amor de su vida, Mary Nell Wylie Green, mientras estudiaba en la Universidad Estatal de Sul Ross.
Después de graduarse de Sul Ross, Tony y Mary se mudaron a Uvalde, donde él comenzó una carrera de 27 años como profesor de biología de preparatoria. Se programará un servicio fúnebre en una fecha posterior en el cementerio Elm Grove de Alpine. En lugar de flores, la familia agradecería donaciones a Jethro Homeward Bound Pets.

El Ayuntamiento de Alpine votó unánimemente anoche para cambiar el nombre de varias calles del campus de Sul Ross.
La medida forma parte de un esfuerzo de años para mejorar la red de nombres en el área de los tres condados.
