I’m Carlos Morales and this is your local news.
All this week, forecasters say there’s a strong chance for rain throughout the Big Bend and Permian Basin, which could lead to flash flooding in the region.
Taylor Sprang says the unusual chance for rain is a result of Hurricane Simon. Sprang is a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Midland.
SPRANG1: “ So what we’re seeing in the models right now is actually, very high chances of seeing over an inch of rain for parts of the area, you know, anywhere from 70 to 90 percent, and, you know, some areas, it’s going to be very localized, but, you know, some areas could see even over three inches in some cases.” (0:19)
Sprang says that heavy rainfall may lead to flash flooding. He urges people to remain cautious and heed all road closures.
SPRANG2: “Low water crossings, urban areas, that’s where we’re kind of the most concerned about seeing a flash flooding. Of course, in the mountains you’ve got a lot of those low water crossings, so yeah, definitely just be cognizant, and, you know, if you see a road closed, don’t drive through it, you know, really, really want to emphasize that point.” (0:20)
We’ll see daily chances for rain through at least Friday morning, then the National Weather Service says cooler temps will settle throughout the region.
