I’m Carlos Morales and this is your local news.
The federal government is asking the U.S. District Judge in El Paso that halted construction of border walls and other barriers in the Big Bend to allow their work to continue while the case likely works its way to the Supreme Court.
In a legal filing this week, lawyers with the Department of Justice lay out their claims and say the injunction issued by Judge Kathleen Cardone was QUOTE “overboard” and has no basis in law.
The lawyers went on to say that the QUOTE “plaintiffs’ environmental, recreational, and aesthetic interest do not outweigh the harm to the public from halting the government’s efforts to construct barriers to stop the flow of illegal immigration and drug smuggling across the southern border.”
At issue in the case is the federal government’s waiving of federal laws to fast-track barrier construction – something they did by stating the Big Bend is an area of “high illegal entry.”
