The Big Bend Hospital District is pursuing grant funding to support a local mobile mammogram service.
For years now, the hospital district has contracted with services from El Paso but has decided to end them. Lynette Brehm, the district’s executive director, talked about what’s next for the services at city council earlier this week.
BREHM1: “What I decided is to pursue funding to start our own program here that would stay here that we could own and operate and quality control and make sure that it’s available to all the residents for Presidio and Brewster county.” (0:14)
Brehm says the federal grant they’re applying for is for $2.2 million dollars and would pay for a mobile coach that would be outfitted with a mammogram machine and a machine that scans for early signs of osteoporosis.
Brehm says the service won’t be full-time.
BREHM2: “It would probably be several weeks a quarter. It’s not going to be full time, it’s not a full-time program because we don’t have enough women in both counties to be a full-time program to hire a full-time technician.” (0:12)
As part of the grant application process, Brehm says Health and Human Services wants to know where the mobile mammogram will be parked and asked if they could park near city hall, which council members said they were okay with.
