Berta Valenzuela passed away peacefully, surrounded by the warmth of her family, on August 20. She was 83.
Born in El Paso, Berta grew up in nearby Fabens and proudly graduated from Texas Western College in 1966, later pursuing her postgraduate education at Sul Ross State University, where she received four masters degrees.
Berta’s teaching journey began in 1966 at Socorro High School, where she inspired countless students as a physical education teacher and coach. Her passion for education continued when she moved to Alpine, where she touched the lives of many at Centennial School and Alpine Junior High. Whether as a classroom teacher, counselor, or diagnostician, she dedicated 56 years to nurturing kids’ minds, earning a special place in the hearts of generations who affectionately remember her as Mrs. V.
In the 1960s, Berta married the love of her life, Jesus Valenzuela – together they had two beautiful daughters. She was a devoted wife and mother, and her life centered around her family, especially her grandchildren, whom she adored. Berta was always there to cheer them on, following them all over Texas to watch them shine in high school and college sports.
Berta’s heart was as big as her kitchen. She welcomed everyone with open arms, ensuring that no guest left without a full stomach. Many of her children’s friends from school found a second home at her dining table, and she offered the same warmth to countless Sul Ross students who were fortunate enough to share a meal at her table.
A devout Catholic, Berta cherished her faith and received her sacraments at Our Lady of Guadalupe Church in Fabens before becoming a beloved member of Our Lady of Peace when her family moved to Alpine. Her spirit shone brightest during the holiday season, especially Christmas.
She leaves behind her two daughters, seven grandchildren; and a great-granddaughter. Berta is also survived by her three sisters, along with fourteen nieces and nephews who were lucky to know her love.
Berta Valenzuela was not just a mother and grandmother; she was the heart of her family and her love will forever resonate in the lives she touched.
A visitation for Berta will be held Friday, Aug. 28 at our Lady of Peace Catholic Church in Alpine at 9:00 a.m. The recitation of the rosary begins at 9:30 a.m. followed by a funeral mass at 10:00 a.m. with the burial taking place after at Holy Angels Cemetery in Alpine.

Alpine ISD’s Michelle Rinehart has been named one of five finalists for the 2026 Texas Superintendent of the Year award.
Put on by the Texas Association of School Boards, the annual recognition highlights exemplary leadership in public education.
Rinehart was selected from a field of 16 regional winners across the state. In a press release announcing the finalists, TASB’s Tiffany Dunne-Oldfield said the five finalists up for the honor demonstrate QUOTE “the vision, collaboration, and dedication it takes to lead
strong public schools. Their work also reflects what is possible when superintendents and
locally elected school boards work together to serve their communities.”
The 2026 Superintendent of the Year will be announced later this fall on October 10 in Houston.

In a legal filing yesterday (MONDAY), the Trump administration says its pause on border security plans within Big Bend National Park will last at least until August 31.
The head of Customs and Border Protection Rodney Scott temporarily stopped the work happening in order to meet with local leaders and to do what he called a “personal evaluation” of the region. In the court documents filed this week, the government said the work done prior to the pause was needed to facilitate QUOTE “geotechnical surveys” – which the government said is needed to assess soil, rock and groundwater conditions.
The Trump administration’s $1.7 billion border security plan for Big Bend National Park involves vehicle barriers, patrol roads and new surveillance technology.

Beginning next month (SEPTEMBER), “Lights Out, Texas,” a statewide campaign to reduce the mortality rates of migratory birds, gets underway.
Starting September 5, help birds that fly over Texas during their migratory season by turning off all non-essential lights at your home, building or any other structures from 11:00 p.m. to 6:00 a.m. each night.
“Lights Out Texas” asks you to not use landscape lighting for trees or gardens where birds may be resting. You can also close blinds at night to reduce the amount of light being emitted from windows.
The lights out campaign continues until October 29.

Next month (SEPTEMBER), St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Marfa will host a golf tournament fundraiser.
The tournament will be a two-man scramble. Entry is $120 per team with lunch included.
All proceeds go to the operation of St. Mary’s Church.
The two-man scramble takes place Sept. 26 with registration beginning at 8:00 a.m. and the shotgun start at 10:00 a.m.

Berta Valenzuela falleció pacíficamente, rodeada del cariño de su familia, el 20 de agosto. Tenía 83 años.
Nacida en El Paso, Berta creció en la cercana localidad de Fabens y se graduó con orgullo del Texas Western College en 1966; posteriormente, cursó estudios de posgrado en la Sul Ross State University, donde obtuvo cuatro maestrías.
La trayectoria docente de Berta comenzó en 1966 en la escuela Socorro High School, donde inspiró a innumerables estudiantes como profesora de educación física y entrenadora. Su pasión por la enseñanza continuó tras mudarse a Alpine, donde marcó la vida de muchas personas en la escuela Centennial y en Alpine Junior High. Ya fuera como maestra, consejera o especialista en diagnóstico educativo, dedicó 56 años a cultivar las mentes de los jóvenes, ganándose un lugar especial en el corazón de generaciones que la recuerdan cariñosamente como “Mrs. V”.
En la década de 1960, Berta se casó con el amor de su vida, Jesús Valenzuela; juntos tuvieron dos hijas maravillosas. Fue una esposa y madre dedicada, y su vida giraba en torno a su familia, especialmente a sus nietos, a quienes adoraba.
Deja a sus dos hijas, siete nietos y una bisnieta. A Berta también le sobreviven sus tres hermanas y catorce sobrinos que tuvieron la suerte de conocer su amor.
El velatorio de Berta se llevará a cabo el viernes 28 de agosto en la iglesia católica Our Lady of Peace en Alpine, a las 9:00 a. m. El rezo del rosario comenzará a las 9:30 a. m., seguido de la misa de funeral a las 10:00 a. m.; el sepelio tendrá lugar posteriormente en el cementerio Holy Angels de Alpine.

Michelle Rinehart, del Distrito Escolar Independiente de Alpine (Alpine ISD), ha sido nombrada una de las cinco finalistas para el premio al Superintendente del Año de Texas 2026.

En un comunicado de prensa donde se anunciaron los finalistas, Tiffany Dunne-Oldfield, de la TASB, señaló que los cinco candidatos al galardón demuestran —cito— “la visión, la colaboración y la dedicación necesarias para liderar escuelas públicas sólidas. Su labor también refleja lo que es posible cuando los superintendentes y las juntas escolares elegidas localmente trabajan unidos para servir a sus comunidades”.
El nombre del Superintendente del Año 2026 se dará a conocer más adelante este otoño, el 10 de octubre, en Houston.

En un documento judicial presentado ayer (lunes), el gobierno de Trump informó que la pausa en los planes de seguridad fronteriza dentro del Parque Nacional Big Bend se prolongará al menos hasta el 31 de agosto.
El titular de la Oficina de Aduanas y Protección Fronteriza (CBP), Rodney Scott, suspendió temporalmente las obras para reunirse con líderes locales y realizar lo que denominó una “evaluación personal” de la región. En los documentos judiciales presentados esta semana, el gobierno indicó que los trabajos realizados antes de la pausa eran necesarios para facilitar —cito textualmente— “estudios geotécnicos”, los cuales, según el gobierno, son indispensables para evaluar las condiciones del suelo, la roca y las aguas subterráneas.
El plan de seguridad fronteriza del gobierno de Trump para el Parque Nacional Big Bend, valorado en 1.700 millones de dólares, contempla la instalación de barreras para vehículos, caminos de patrullaje y nueva tecnología de vigilancia.

El próximo mes (septiembre) comienza “Lights Out, Texas”, una campaña estatal destinada a reducir la tasa de mortalidad de las aves migratorias.
A partir del 5 de septiembre, ayude a las aves que sobrevuelan Texas durante su temporada migratoria apagando todas las luces no esenciales de su casa, edificio o cualquier otra estructura, entre las 11:00 p. m. y las 6:00 a. m. cada noche.
La campaña “Lights Out, Texas” solicita que no se utilice iluminación ornamental en árboles o jardines donde las aves puedan estar descansando. También puede cerrar las persianas por la noche para reducir la cantidad de luz que sale por las ventanas. La campaña de apagado de luces se extenderá hasta el 29 de octubre.

El torneo se jugará bajo la modalidad *scramble* para equipos de dos personas. La inscripción cuesta 120 dólares por equipo e incluye el almuerzo. Todo lo recaudado se destinará al funcionamiento de la iglesia St. Mary.
