Luciana Valenzuela, of Alpine, has passed away. She was 94.
Born in the warm, close-knit community of Terlingua, Luciana’s life became a tapestry woven with resilience, devotion, and boundless affection, all of which rippled through each generation she embraced.
Luciana—cherished by so many as “Chana” or lovingly called “Granny”—lived her years with an open heart and gentle spirit. From the rugged beauty of Terlingua where she first drew breath, to the hills of Alpine where her journey gently ended, Luciana’s presence was a thread of constancy and warmth.
Family was the true center of Luciana’s world. Surviving her are her loving son and devoted daughter. Luciana’s home was always open, her table welcoming, her arms ever ready to hold a child or grandchild close. Her five grandchildren were her pride and joy, each carrying forward a spark of their Granny’s kindness, humor, and resilience.
Luciana’s story was written not only in milestones but in everyday acts of love. To her family, she was a fortress—steady, sheltering, and always wise with near-mythical advice. To her friends and neighbors, she was an unfailing source of generosity and encouragement.
And those who knew her, whether as Chana, Luciana, or Granny, will miss her uniquely gentle voice and loving embrace, but will carry her memory in each kind gesture and warm gathering.
A visitation to honor Luciana’s life will be held tomorrow (THURSDAY) from 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at Alpine Memorial Funeral Home,
Loved ones will gather for a memorial service on Friday, August 14 at 10:00 a.m. at Grace Christian Fellowship Church in Alpine. Interment will follow at Holy Angels Cemetery.
As the sun sets behind the mountains she so loved, Luciana Valenzuela’s family and friends join together in gratitude for the countless gifts she provided—a legacy of unity, strength, and love everlasting.

One of the state’s top elected officials is urging the federal government to meet with Big Bend leaders and residents before more work is done on border barriers in the region.
Republican Senator John Cornyn wrote to the Department of Homeland Security on Friday, saying federal officials should QUOTE “meet with Texas stakeholders directly to discuss their concerns before proceeding with any additional construction of physical barriers in Big Bend National Park or Big Bend Ranch State Park.”
In recent days, contractors have moved heavy equipment into the park and begun grading land near Santa Elena Canyon. Customs and Border Protection says the activity is preliminary work and needed to gather soil samples.
Cornyn, who lost his re-election bid to Ken Paxton, said he supports border security but believes DHS should talk to the people who live and work in the area before more work is done.

The Museum of the Big Bend has announced the dates for the next Trappings of Texas, the annual exhibition and celebration of Western art, culture and cowboy gear.
The event – which celebrates its 40th anniversary this year – is considered the longest-running exhibit and sale of its kind – and is known for bringing together artists and craftspeople whose work display the traditions of the Big Bend and cowboy culture.
This year’s event takes place from Thursday, Sept. 17 through Saturday, Oct. 31 at the museum, which is located on the campus of Sul Ross State University in Alpine.

This weekend, the Alpine Country Club and Los Compas Golf will host a golf benefit for the DPS trooper that was involved in a head-on collision outside the city in June.
The event is a three-person scramble, and the entry fee is $75 per person, or $225 per team. There is a 54 team limit.
The benefit takes place Aug. 15 with morning tee time at 7:30 a.m. and the afternoon tee time at 1:30 p.m.
Proceeds will go toward trooper Zach Vasquez who continues to recover from the accident.

Also this weekend, Saint Paul’s Episcopal Church in Marfa is hosting their annual back-to-school supplies giveaway.
Families are invited to Saint Paul’s to pick up brand new backpacks and school supplies. Ice cream treats will be also available for all.
The “School Supplies Give Away and Ice Cream Social” takes place on Saturday, August 15 beginning at 10:00 a.m.

Ha fallecido Luciana Valenzuela, residente de Alpine. Tenía 94 años.
Nacida en la cálida y unida comunidad de Terlingua, la vida de Luciana fue un tapiz tejido con resiliencia, devoción y un afecto inagotable; cualidades que dejaron huella en cada generación que ella abrazó.
Luciana —apreciada por muchos como “Chana” o llamada cariñosamente “Granny” (abuelita)— vivió sus años con el corazón abierto y un espíritu bondadoso. Desde la belleza agreste de Terlingua, donde dio su primer aliento, hasta las colinas de Alpine, donde su viaje llegó serenamente a su fin, la presencia de Luciana fue un hilo constante de calidez y firmeza.
Le sobreviven su querido hijo y su dedicada hija. El hogar de Luciana siempre estaba abierto, su mesa acogedora y sus brazos siempre listos para estrechar a un hijo o a un nieto. Sus cinco nietos eran su orgullo y alegría; cada uno de ellos lleva consigo una chispa de la bondad, el humor y la resiliencia de su abuela.
Quienes la conocieron —ya fuera como Chana, Luciana o Granny— extrañarán su voz singularmente dulce y su abrazo amoroso, pero conservarán su recuerdo en cada gesto amable y en cada reunión cálida.
Mañana (jueves), de 4:00 p. m. a 8:00 p. m., se llevará a cabo un velatorio en la funeraria Alpine Memorial Funeral Home para honrar la vida de Luciana.
Sus seres queridos se reunirán para un servicio conmemorativo el viernes 14 de agosto a las 10:00 a. m. en la iglesia Grace Christian Fellowship de Alpine. Posteriormente, se realizará el sepelio en el cementerio Holy Angels.

Uno de los principales funcionarios electos del estado está instando al gobierno federal a reunirse con líderes y residentes de Big Bend antes de que se realicen más trabajos en las barreras fronterizas de la región.
El senador republicano John Cornyn envió una carta al Departamento de Seguridad Nacional el viernes, señalando que los funcionarios federales deberían —cito— “reunirse directamente con las partes interesadas de Texas para discutir sus inquietudes antes de proceder con cualquier construcción adicional de barreras físicas en el Parque Nacional Big Bend o en el Parque Estatal Big Bend Ranch”.
En los últimos días, contratistas han trasladado maquinaria pesada al parque y han comenzado a nivelar el terreno cerca del Cañón de Santa Elena. La Oficina de Aduanas y Protección Fronteriza afirma que esta actividad consiste en trabajos preliminares necesarios para recolectar muestras de suelo.
