William Doherty – a beloved brother, uncle, and friend, affectionately known by many as “Wild Bill” – has passed away
Will graduated from Alpine High School in 2001 and went on to attend Texas Tech University and the University of the South before earning his Bachelor’s degree from Sul Ross State University.
Will had an incredibly curious mind and a gift for understanding how things worked. He loved working on cars, go-karts, motor bikes and just about anything mechanical. If it had an engine or could be taken apart and rebuilt, Will was in his element. He also had a deep love for music, especially 2pac, most rap music and the dance music of the early 2000s.
His adventurous spirit led him to Los Angeles, where he worked as a production assistant before returning to Texas, where he also worked in TV production and hospitality management in Marfa.
More than anything, Will will be remembered for his intelligence, quick wit, infectious laugh, and the deep love he had for the people closest to him. Will spent many years courageously searching for answers to complex health challenges that profoundly affected his life. Despite everything he endured, he never stopped hoping for relief. We take comfort in knowing he is finally at peace.
Will is survived by his sister and nephew, and many beloved uncles and aunts, cousins throughout the United States and Europe, and countless lifelong friends whose lives were richer because they knew him.
The family would like to thank everyone who has reached out with prayers, love, stories, and memories of Will. Your kindness has brought comfort during one of the most difficult times of our lives.
Remember Will for the remarkable man he was: intelligent, funny, fiercely loyal, endlessly curious, and deeply loved.

At today’s (TUESDAY’S) Brewster County commissioners court meeting, Alpine councilman Rick Stephens provided an update on the water infrastructure issues facing the city.
Stephens told county officials that the replacement booster pump for the Muzquis well that went down recently has arrived and is being installed.
STEPHENS: “I think we’re beginning to see the light at the end of the tunnel. We don’t think it’s a train, but we know that we have lots more work to work on.” (0:10)
With this update and others, Stephens says the city should expect to move out of stage 4 water restrictions soon.
And in regards to the water boil notice, Stephens said testing is underway and once the tests confirm the water is safe for consumption, the boil water notice will be lifted.

The Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service will host a seminar on the New World screwworm for livestock producers, landowners and wildlife managers in Culberson County.
The meeting will be Monday, Aug. 24 in Van Horn at the Van Horn Convention Center. The seminar starts at 3:00 p.m. The event is free and open to the public.

At the end of August, the Big Bend Regional Hospital District will hold a groundbreaking ceremony for the new Presidio Rural Health Center.
Once built, the 6,500-square-foot health center will feature a medical clinic, laboratory services and two living spaces for visiting medical care providers.
The groundbreaking ceremony is Wednesday, Aug. 26 at 12:30 p.m. at the construction site across from the Presidio Activity Center.
In a press release, the district’s executive director Lynette Brehm said the project marks the first major health care facility construction in Presidio in 30 years.

Also at the end of the month (AUGUST), the Alpine Cemetery Association will hold a community meeting to discuss the aging irrigation system at the Elm Grove cemetery.
According to the association, the underground water lines are over 50 years old and the cemetery’s irrigation system now experiences frequent line breaks on top of issues with the cemetery’s water wells. The group says simple fixes are no longer working and finding a “permanent solution will require the ideas, support and collaboration of the families who care most about Elm Grove.”
The community meeting will be Wednesday, Aug. 26 at 6:00 p.m. at the Alpine ISD auditorium.

Ha fallecido William Doherty, un querido hermano, tío y amigo, conocido cariñosamente por muchos como “Wild Bill”.

Will poseía una mente increíblemente curiosa y un don natural para comprender el funcionamiento de las cosas. Le encantaba trabajar en automóviles, karts, motocicletas y prácticamente cualquier elemento mecánico;

Le sobreviven su hermana y su sobrino, así como numerosos tíos, tías y primos repartidos por Estados Unidos y Europa, además de un sinfín de amigos de toda la vida cuyas vidas fueron más ricas gracias a haberlo conocido.
La familia desea expresar su agradecimiento a todos aquellos que han ofrecido sus oraciones, cariño, anécdotas y recuerdos de Will. Su amabilidad nos ha brindado consuelo en uno de los momentos más difíciles de nuestras vidas.

En la reunión de hoy (martes) de la Junta de Comisionados del Condado de Brewster, el concejal de Alpine, Rick Stephens, ofreció una actualización sobre los problemas de infraestructura hídrica que enfrenta la ciudad.
Stephens informó a las autoridades del condado que ya llegó la bomba de refuerzo de repuesto para el pozo Muzquis —que había dejado de funcionar recientemente— y que actualmente se está instalando.

Gracias a esta y otras novedades, Stephens afirma que se espera que la ciudad pase pronto de la etapa 4 de restricciones de agua a una fase menos severa.

El Servicio de Extensión AgriLife de Texas A&M organizará un seminario sobre el gusano barrenador del Nuevo Mundo (*New World screwworm*) dirigido a ganaderos, propietarios de tierras y gestores de vida silvestre del condado de Culberson.
La reunión tendrá lugar el lunes 24 de agosto en el Centro de Convenciones de Van Horn. El seminario comenzará a las 3:00 p. m. El evento es gratuito y está abierto al público.

A finales de agosto, el Distrito Hospitalario Regional de Big Bend (Big Bend Regional Hospital District) celebrará la ceremonia de inicio de obras del nuevo Centro de Salud Rural de Presidio.
Una vez construido, el centro de salud —que contará con una superficie de 6.500 pies cuadrados— dispondrá de una clínica médica, servicios de laboratorio y dos espacios residenciales para profesionales de la salud visitantes.
La ceremonia de inicio de obras tendrá lugar el miércoles 26 de agosto a las 12:30 p. m. en el sitio de construcción, frente al Centro de Actividades de Presidio (Presidio Activity Center).
En un comunicado de prensa, la directora ejecutiva del distrito, Lynette Brehm, señaló que este proyecto representa la primera construcción importante de una instalación sanitaria en Presidio en 30 años.

También a finales de este mes (agosto), la Asociación del Cementerio de Alpine (Alpine Cemetery Association) organizará una reunión comunitaria para tratar el tema del envejecido sistema de riego del cementerio Elm Grove.
Según la asociación, las tuberías subterráneas tienen más de 50 años de antigüedad y el sistema de riego del cementerio sufre actualmente roturas frecuentes, además de presentar problemas con los pozos de agua del recinto. El grupo afirma que las reparaciones sencillas ya no son suficientes y que encontrar una “solución permanente requerirá las ideas, el apoyo y la colaboración de las familias que más se preocupan por Elm Grove”.
La reunión comunitaria se celebrará el miércoles 26 de agosto a las 6:00 p. m. en el auditorio del Distrito Escolar Independiente de Alpine (Alpine ISD).
