The city of Alpine is once again implementing water restrictions amid what it’s calling a “critical failure” with the city’s well system.

Mayor Catherine Eaves says that failure is related to a well the city has leased to help ease the water emergency.
According to Eaves, the leased well isn’t pumping as much water as expected – and the new well the city is installing to replace the one that failed back in April isn’t ready yet.
EAVES1: “It’s not a water supply issue, it’s the same old infrastructure issue. // If we can’t get the water out, that’s a problem.”
Eaves says the city is looking to bring back online an old pump to help mitigate the problem. She expects it to be in use by the middle or end of next week.
Among other things, the stage four restrictions include: no outdoor irrigation or landscape watering, no washing vehicles, driveways, sidewalks, or other paved surfaces, and limited water usage to essential health and safety needs only.

There are a few days left to schedule your August bulk trash pick-up with the city of Alpine.
You have until this Friday before noon to make your appointment for next week. The city will haul away your trash, including furniture, large plastic toys and appliances.
Each household is limited to 5 items or 3 cubic yards worth items to be picked up.

The Sunshine House has named Sylvana Diaz as the organization’s new executive director.
According to a press release from the group, Diaz has over a decade of experience in nonprofit finance and operations. Originally from Laredo, Texas, Diaz and her family have lived in the Big Bend for the last 10 years.
In announcing the appointment, Katy Williams – president of the Sunshine House’s board of directors – said the board is confident Diaz “has the leadership needed to guide Sunshine House into its next chapter.”
Diaz said she looks forward to strengthening the organization’s mission – caring for the seniors and homebound of Alpine and Marathon.
As executive director, Diaz will oversee the daily operations of the senior center while steering forward the nonprofit’s priorities
Since 1978, the Sunshine House has helped older adults remain healthy, independent, and connected to their community.

This weekend, head to Marfa for the annual Marfa Golf Classic – a two person scramble challenge.
The first place prize in the competition is $1,300, second place gets $750 and third place wins $550. The two-day event takes place Saturday, August 1 and Sunday, August 2. Tee times are 8:00 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. respectively.

Next week, the Borderlands Research Institute at Sul Ross will host a three-day conference on sustaining lands to support wildlife across Texas.
BRI, along with the Texas Wildlife Association and Texas Parks and Wildlife, will bring together landowners, industry experts, and like-minded conservationists to cover emerging issues in the Trans-Pecos, big game and non-game research and management, applied management, and land stewardship.
The Trans-Pecos Wildlife Conference takes place August 5 through 7 at the Morgan Center at Sul Ross.

La ciudad de Alpine está implementando nuevamente restricciones en el uso del agua debido a lo que califica como una “falla crítica” en su sistema de pozos.
La alcaldesa Catherine Eaves afirma que la falla está relacionada con un pozo que la ciudad alquiló para ayudar a aliviar la emergencia hídrica.
Según Eaves, el pozo alquilado no está bombeando tanta agua como se esperaba, y el nuevo pozo que la ciudad está instalando para reemplazar al que falló en abril aún no está listo.

Eaves señala que la ciudad busca reactivar una bomba antigua para ayudar a mitigar el problema. Espera que esté operativa a mediados o finales de la próxima semana.
Entre otras medidas, las restricciones de fase cuatro incluyen: prohibición de riego de exteriores o jardines; prohibición de lavar vehículos, entradas de garaje, aceras u otras superficies pavimentadas; y limitación del uso del agua exclusivamente a necesidades esenciales de salud y seguridad.

The Sunshine House ha nombrado a Sylvana Diaz como nueva directora ejecutiva de la organización.
