The Big Bend Ranch Rodeo returns this week for its 26th year, celebrating working cowboys and preserving western heritage.
The annual event will bring together 12 teams from Texas, New Mexico and Kansas.
Mattie Sargent is with the Big Bend Ranch Rodeo. She spoke with KVLF about this year’s event.
SARGENT1: “So we have different events than a regular rodeo. These are working cowboys so they make their living on a ranch somewhere, they don’t rodeo professionally. Their gear is going to be what they use everyday on a ranch.”
The annual event includes a youth competition and a Saturday night dance at Skelton’s Runway.
The 26th annual Big Bend Ranch Rodeo kicks off next week – Friday, August 7 with a rodeo performance beginning at 7:00 p.m.

To celebrate the waning days of Summer, the Alpine Public Library is bringing together over 30 vehicles for the first-ever “Touch a Truck” event!
During the event, you’ll be able to get an up close look at all kinds of vehicles. Casey Costa says it’s kind of like a petting zoo for cars. She’s the youth services librarian at the Alpine Public Library.
COSTA1: “And we’re gonna have all these vehicles are going to come and park and kids can, everybody can climb in them, beep the horns, check out all the buttons, and all the things.”
Costa says some of the vehicles you can expect to see range from law enforcement vehicles and a fire truck to a garbage truck and a school bus and TxDOT vehicles too.
COSTA2: “So we have all kinds of vehicles coming. And all of them that I approached for this had never heard of this, but they all anyway despite that were all immediately absolutely ‘yes, we’ll be there!’ so it’s just a testament to the community.” (0:13)
The “Touch a Truck” event takes place this weekend on Saturday, Aug. 1 at the Alpine Public Library from 10:00 a.m. to noon.

This weekend, the Judd Foundation in Marfa is hosting a Star Party with McDonald Observatory.
The night of star gazing includes food, music and a constellation talk with Ryan Cantrell of McDonald Observatory.
The celebration of the nighttime sky starts on Sunday, August 2 7:00 p.m. at the Block, located at 400 W. El Paso Street in Marfa.

This weekend (SUNDAY), you’ll also want to head to the Alpine Public Library to watch a livestream of a summertime concert put on by the Seattle Chamber Music Society.
Catch a delayed stream of the performance, which will feature Haydn (HAY-den), Respighi (reh-spee-ghee), and Dvorak (duh-vor-AK) – on Sunday, August 2 at 4:00 p.m.
The location to watch the performance will be the community room of the Alpine Public Library. Entrance to the community room is on the north side of the building.

Next week, the Borderlands Research Institute at Sul Ross will host a three-day conference on sustaining lands to support wildlife across Texas.
BRI, along with the Texas Wildlife Association and Texas Parks and Wildlife, will bring together landowners, industry experts, and like-minded conservationists to cover emerging issues in the Trans-Pecos, big game and non-game research and management, applied management, and land stewardship.
The Trans-Pecos Wildlife Conference takes place August 5 through 7 at the Morgan Center at Sul Ross.

El Big Bend Ranch Rodeo regresa esta semana para celebrar su 26.ª edición, honrando a los vaqueros de trabajo y preservando la herencia del Oeste.

Para celebrar los últimos días del verano, la Biblioteca Pública de Alpine reunirá más de 30 vehículos en su primer evento “Touch a Truck” (donde se pueden tocar y explorar los vehículos).
Durante el evento, podrá ver de cerca todo tipo de vehículos. Casey Costa, bibliotecaria de servicios juveniles de la Biblioteca Pública de Alpine, comenta que es algo así como un zoológico de contacto, pero con vehículos.
Cito: “Tendremos todos estos vehículos estacionados; los niños —y todo el mundo— podrán subirse a ellos, tocar la bocina, explorar los botones y descubrir todas sus funciones”.
Costa señala que entre los vehículos que se podrán ver habrá patrullas policiales, un camión de bomberos, un camión de basura, un autobús escolar y vehículos del TxDOT (Departamento de Transporte de Texas).
menciono: “Vendrán vehículos de todo tipo. Ninguno de los responsables a quienes contacté conocía este tipo de evento, pero aun así todos respondieron de inmediato con un rotundo ‘¡sí, ahí estaremos!’. Es una gran muestra del espíritu de nuestra comunidad”.
El evento “Touch a Truck” se llevará a cabo este fin de semana, el sábado 1 de agosto, en la Biblioteca Pública de Alpine, de 10:00 a. m. a 12:00 del mediodía.

Este fin de semana, la Fundación Judd de Marfa organizará una “Star Party” (fiesta de observación de estrellas) en colaboración con el Observatorio McDonald.
La velada de observación astronómica incluirá comida, música y una charla sobre constelaciones a cargo de Ryan Cantrell, del Observatorio McDonald.
