During this week’s city council meeting, local officials heard about an emerging effort: saving the old train house on Del Rio street.
Todd Elrod has been looking into the possibility of preserving the rail station. He gave council members an update about the effort Tuesday night.
ELROD1: The whole community, every time, people have come up to me on the streets wherever I’m at and they talk about this building – the memories they have with it, what they remember, all this stuff. The whole community really wants to do something with this building, turning it into a museum, or a space we can share.” (0:20)
According to Elrod, the Texas Department of Transportation – which owns the building – is looking to tear it down to open up the rail line and put in a switching station there.
But before any preservation efforts can be made, Elrod said there are a lot of considerations like conducting asbestos tests and lead tests to make sure the building’s even okay to move.

On Tuesday, county officials hold the next commissioner’s court meeting.
As part of the July 28 meeting, county commissioners will hold a workshop on next year’s county budget. The discussion will cover wages and salaries and includes a review of a draft budget for 2027.
Before the workshop, county commissioners will receive the usual department updates, which includes emergency services, the treasure’s office and the tourism department.
The next Brewster County commissioner’s court is Tuesday, July 28 beginning at 9:30 a.m. at the county courthouse.

Next week, the Borderlands Research Institute at Sul Ross will host a three-day conference on sustaining lands to support wildlife across Texas.
BRI, along with the Texas Wildlife Association and Texas Parks and Wildlife, will bring together landowners, industry experts, and like-minded conservationists to cover emerging issues in the Trans-Pecos, big game and non-game research and management, applied management, and land stewardship.
The Trans-Pecos Wildlife Conference takes place August 5 through 7 at the Morgan Center at Sul Ross.

Next month (AUGUST), the Big Bend Ranch Rodeo takes place in Alpine at the S.A.L.E. Arena.
The annual event kicks off Friday, August 7 with a WRCA rodeo performance beginning at 7:00 p.m. That weekend there will also be a youth rodeo performance, a youth dummy roping contest and live music.
