This evening (MONDAY), officials with Texas Agrilife Extension are hosting a community forum on the New World Screwworm.
The meeting is intended to help ranchers and other people in the area learn about the threat the parasitic fly poses to wildlife, livestock and people too. The community forum will also cover what folks can do themselves to help mitigate the presence and spread of the new world screwworm going forward.
Currently, the closest identified cases of screwworm are in Terrell County.
The parasitic fly had been eradicated from the U.S., but in recent weeks has been detected in Texas and New Mexico. The screwworm, named for the way its larvae dig into the living flesh of warm-blooded animals poses a serious threat to the state and its economy.
The community forum will take place this evening (MONDAY) at 6:00 p.m. at the Turner Range Animal Science Center in Alpine.
Tomorrow (TUESDAY), county officials are holding a public hearing on creating an emergency services district.
The meeting will determine whether to move forward with an election in the fall to create the ESD, which if ultimately approved would collect taxes to fund emergency services in the northern half of Brewster County.
The public meeting is Tuesday, June 30 at 9:30 a.m. at the Brewster County Commissioner’s courtroom.
