Patricia “Pat” Roberts Wells, a longtime resident of Marfa, passed away peacefully in Dickinson, Texas, on May 22. She was 92.
Pat was born in Oakland, California, and attended elementary and high school there, graduating in 1953. She met her husband, Marlowe Wells, while he was serving in the Air Force in California. After Marlowe completed his service, they moved to Marfa, where they shared a loving marriage that lasted fifty years.
In 1978, Pat fulfilled a lifelong ambition by graduating from nursing school. She began a long and dedicated career caring for others as a nurse. Pat worked at both the hospital and nursing home in Alpine, and also served as a traveling nurse for several counties in the area. In her later years, she provided private duty nursing for many patients in their homes. Nursing was more than just a profession for Pat; it was a passion, and she cherished caring for and visiting with all her patients.
Pat was renowned among her family for her cooking and baking skills. Family visits were always accompanied by the treat of her homemade waffles and syrup. She had a deep love for collecting recipes and cookbooks.
Pat’s devotion to her church was another important part of her life. She attended Saint Paul’s Episcopal Church in Marfa, where she served as treasurer for many years and enjoyed socializing with fellow parishioners.
Pat touched the hearts of many throughout her life and will be greatly missed by those who knew her.
Pat is survived by her three children; as well as six grandchildren and eleven great grandchildren.
Graveside services will be held later this month on June 27, 2026, at 10:00 a.m. at the Marfa Cemetery.

County officials have postponed a public hearing on creating an emergency services district.

The meeting was going to be held this week, but has since been rescheduled to Tuesday, June 30 at 9:30 a.m. at the Brewster County Commissioner’s courtroom.
The meeting comes after several months of work from city and county officials to figure out how to provide emergency services in the northern half of Brewster County since the contract with the current EMS provider isn’t being renewed. The hearing will determine whether to move forward with an election in the fall to create an emergency services district.
If approved, the district would collect taxes to fund those emergency services.
The hearing is open to the public and anyone who attends can weigh in on whether they believe the emergency services district should be created.

Later this week (THURSDAY), the Small Business Development Center at Sul Ross State University will offer courses for entrepreneurs on improving their decision-making skills with AI.
During this one-hour training, you’ll learn how to pair Google Analytics with Artificial Intelligence to turn raw traffic into clear business insights. You’ll get a clear intro to what matters and how to use modern tools to move your business forward. If you’ve ever wondered what’s working, what’s not, or how to predict what your customers will do next, this session is your starting point.

The local nonprofit Alpine Community Projects is looking to raise money for new furniture at the municipal pool.
The organization says the city needs 16 chairs, five tables and an umbrella stand for one of the lifeguards. And the money raised by the community will be matched by the Permian Basin Area Foundation.

On Thursday, Front Street Books will host an audiobook meetup.
All you need to do is bring your headphones and your preferred device. Just find a cozy spot in the store’s reading room and listen to an audiobook. And if you have crafting projects, feel free to bring them so long as they’re relatively quiet.
The bookstore will provide coloring pages and pencils for anyone needing something to work on while listening to their audiobook. The first 10 attendees will receive a free audiobook credit for the app Libro.fm.
The audiobook meetup happens Thursday, June 18 from 3:00 to 5:00 p.m.

At the end of the month (JUNE), Frontera de Salud is coming to West Texas to provide medical services for people with limited access to health care.
Frontera de Salud is a group from Texas Tech, and will provide blood pressure and glucose screenings, school physicals, women’s health exams, ultrasounds, EKGs, and general check-ups.
Walk-ins are welcome, and the services are free.
The group will be in Alpine on Monday, June 29 at the Sunshine House from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00. They’ll also have clinics in Presidio, Fort Davis and Valentine.

Las autoridades del condado han pospuesto una audiencia pública sobre la creación de un distrito de servicios de emergencia.
La reunión estaba prevista para esta semana, pero ha sido reprogramada para el martes 30 de junio a las 9:30 a. m. en la sala de sesiones de la Junta de Comisionados del condado de Brewster.
Esta reunión se produce tras varios meses de trabajo por parte de funcionarios municipales y del condado para determinar cómo prestar servicios de emergencia en la mitad norte del condado de Brewster, dado que no se renovará el contrato con el actual proveedor de servicios médicos de emergencia (EMS). La organización local sin fines de lucro Alpine Community Projects busca recaudar fondos para adquirir mobiliario nuevo para la piscina municipal.

A finales de este mes (junio), Frontera de Salud visitará el oeste de Texas para ofrecer servicios médicos a personas con acceso limitado a la atención sanitaria.
Frontera de Salud es un grupo de Texas Tech que realizará pruebas de presión arterial y glucosa, exámenes físicos escolares, revisiones de salud para la mujer, ecografías, electrocardiogramas y chequeos generales. Se atiende sin necesidad de cita previa y los servicios son gratuitos.
El grupo estará en Alpine el lunes 29 de junio, en Sunshine House, de 9:00 a. m. a 3:00 p. m. También ofrecerán servicios en Presidio, Fort Davis y Valentine.
