Toribio Rodriguez, who called Far West Texas home, passed away peacefully on June 4 in Colorado surrounded by the love of his family.
Born in Fort Davis, Toribio remained proud of his West Texas roots throughout his life. He served his country honorably in the United States Air Force for four years and was stationed in France during his military service.
Following his service, he held several jobs before beginning a career with the Texas Highway Department, where he worked until his retirement. Toribio was a man of faith who cherished his Catholic beliefs. In his later years, he enjoyed reading his Bible, spending time with family, and working on Lego projects, a hobby that brought him great enjoyment and satisfaction. He also had a lifelong interest in airplanes and automobiles and enjoyed learning about them throughout his life.
Toribio was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Alice Rodriguez. Toribio and Alice shared 58 years of marriage.
He is survived by his loving daughter, two grandchildren and his five siblings. Toribio is also survived by numerous nieces, nephews, extended family members, and friends.
The family wishes to express their heartfelt gratitude to all those who offered prayers, support, and kindness throughout Toribio’s life and during his final days.
Services will be held next week on Thursday, June 18 at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Fort Davis. The rosary will be prayed at 9:30 a.m., followed by a funeral mass. Burial will follow immediately at St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery. A reception will be held afterward at the St. Joseph Parish Hall.
The family asks that Toribio be remembered for his love of family, his faithful service to his country, his devotion to God, and the quiet strength with which he lived his life.

Tomorrow (THURSDAY), river guides and outdoor enthusiasts will celebrate the 82nd anniversary of Big Bend National Park.
The park was established in 1944, a short week after Allied forces stormed the beaches of Normandy during World War II.
To celebrate the park, there will be a parade and party with food, drinks and live music.
The parade will start at 5:30 p.m. and run from Desert Sports to the Terlingua Porch. The party kicks off at 6:00 p.m. at the porch.

This weekend, the Museum of the Big Bend at Sul Ross State University will celebrate Alpine Photo weekend.
The two-day event kicks off Friday, June 12 with the opening reception for “Quaerite et Invenietis” (KWAR-eh-teh et in-vehn-EE-tis), a show by acclaimed photographer Bobby Greeson. His striking images will take you into the worlds of the White Mountains in California and the Antelope Canyon in Arizona. The reception for Greeson’s show will be 5 to 7 p.m.
Then on Saturday, June 13, the museum will host a full day of free presentations, workshops and photography activities from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. The events are designed for photographers of all skill levels.

Next week, the city of Alpine will hold their next regular city council meeting.
As part of the agenda, city council members are set to grant funding opportunities using the city’s hotel occupancy tax fund. The city will also discuss the “development of a strategic water infrastructure plan” and consider evaluating the city’s existing wells and determining what needs repairing or replacing.
The city will also talk about the agreement with Alpine ISD over the use and repair of Manuel Payne Field.
The council meets Tuesday, June 16 at 5:30 p.m. at the city council chambers.

On Wednesday, June 17, the Jeff Davis County Library will host a welcoming party for the incoming library director.
The “Hail & Farewell” event will give residents an opportunity to meet the library’s new director, Jay Mann, and say goodbye to the outgoing director, Erin Ray.
The event will be June 17 from 4:00 to 6:00 p.m. at the Jeff Davis County Library, located at 100 Memorial Square in Fort Davis.

Toribio Rodríguez, quien consideraba al lejano oeste de Texas su hogar, falleció pacíficamente el 4 de junio en Colorado, rodeado del amor de su familia.
Nacido en Fort Davis, Toribio siempre se sintió orgulloso de sus raíces en el oeste de Texas. Prestó servicio a su país con honor en la Fuerza Aérea de los Estados Unidos durante cuatro años y estuvo destacado en Francia durante su servicio militar.
Tras finalizar su servicio, desempeñó varios trabajos antes de iniciar una carrera en el Departamento de Carreteras de Texas, donde laboró hasta su jubilación.
A Toribio le precedió en la muerte su amada esposa, Alice Rodríguez. Toribio y Alice compartieron 58 años de matrimonio.
Le sobreviven su querida hija, dos nietos y sus cinco hermanos. También le sobreviven numerosos sobrinos, familiares y amigos.
La familia desea expresar su más sincero agradecimiento a todos aquellos que ofrecieron oraciones, apoyo y muestras de cariño a lo largo de la vida de Toribio y durante sus últimos días.
Los servicios funerarios se llevarán a cabo la próxima semana, el jueves 18 de junio, en la iglesia católica de San José (St. Joseph Catholic Church) en Fort Davis. El rezo del rosario tendrá lugar a las 9:30 a. m., seguido de la misa de funeral. El sepelio se realizará inmediatamente después en el cementerio católico de San José. Posteriormente, se ofrecerá una recepción en el salón parroquial de San José.

Mañana (jueves), guías fluviales y aficionados a las actividades al aire libre celebrarán el 82.º aniversario del Parque Nacional Big Bend.
El parque se estableció en 1944, apenas una semana después de que las fuerzas aliadas desembarcaran en las playas de Normandía durante la Segunda Guerra Mundial.
Para celebrar el aniversario del parque, habrá un desfile y una fiesta con comida, bebidas y música en vivo.
El desfile comenzará a las 5:30 p. m. y recorrerá el trayecto desde Desert Sports hasta Terlingua Porch. La fiesta dará comienzo a las 6:00 p. m. en dicho lugar.

Este fin de semana, el Museum of the Big Bend de la Universidad Estatal Sul Ross celebrará el Alpine Photo Weekend.

La próxima semana, la ciudad de Alpine celebrará su siguiente reunión ordinaria del concejo municipal.
Como parte del orden del día, los miembros del concejo tienen previsto asignar fondos provenientes del impuesto municipal de ocupación hotelera. Asimismo, la ciudad debatirá sobre el “desarrollo de un plan estratégico de infraestructura hídrica” y considerará evaluar los pozos existentes para determinar cuáles requieren reparación o sustitución.
También se abordará el acuerdo con el Distrito Escolar Independiente de Alpine (Alpine ISD) relativo al uso y reparación del campo Manuel Payne.
El concejo se reunirá el martes 16 de junio a las 5:30 p. m. en la sala de sesiones del concejo municipal.
