Yolanda Parras Marquez, who called Alpine home throughout her life, has passed away. She was 74.
Yolanda married Reymario Marquez of Sanderson, and together they welcomed two sons. Following the loss of her husband in 1979, Yolanda continued to devote herself to raising her family with strength, love, and determination. Later, she married Ramon Yniguez of Alpine with whom she shared many years of companionship and love.
Throughout her life, Yolanda was known for her strong work ethic and dedication to serving her community. She worked for American National Insurance and later for the Alpine Housing Authority, where she built lasting relationships and earned the respect and friendship of many colleagues and residents.
Yolanda’s greatest joy in life was spending time with her family. She had a special love for flowers and plants and found great happiness in nurturing them and watching them grow. She was also an avid animal lover who adored cats and dogs, and she enjoyed listening to music that brought comfort and joy to her days. Her home and heart were always open to family, friends, and the pets she loved so dearly.
Yolanda is survived by her loving husband, Ramon Yniguez; two sons; a sister; three grandchildren; a great-grandson; and a great-granddaughter expected to arrive soon. She is also survived by numerous nieces, nephews, extended family members, and friends who will deeply miss her presence.
Yolanda’s life was a testament to love, perseverance, and dedication to family.
Services for Yolanda are scheduled for tomorrow (THURSDAY), June 11 beginning with a viewing at Alpine Memorial Funeral Home from 1:00 to 9:00 p.m.
A funeral mass for Yolanda will be held Friday, June 12, 2026, at 10:00 a.m. at Our Lady of Peace Catholic Church in Alpine.

Last night (TUESDAY), officials with the city of Alpine voted unanimously to remove city secretary Geoffrey “Geo” Calderon from his position.
Calderon was arrested earlier this month (JUNE) and is facing multiple felony charges, including possession of a controlled substance and resisting arrest.
Council member Richard Portillo:
PORTILLO1: “I make the motion for city council to remove from office city secretary Geo Calderon and direct the city management for termination of employment effective tomorrow, June 10.” (0:10)
Calderon had worked with the city since 2018. He was appointed city secretary in 2021.
Tuesday night, the city council also appointed Clarinda Espinoza as the interim city secretary.

City officials in Presidio have penned a letter to officials with the federal government asking for the removal of concertina wire that’s been placed in a flood plain along the Rio Grande.
With the potential for flooding, the officials say the wire poses a threat and say QUOTE “significant harm to area residents, workers, and visitors is imminent.”
The group sent the letter to Customs and Border Protection commissioner Rodney Scott and Maj. Gen. Curtis Taylor, the commander of Joint Task Force Southern Border.
They end the letter by saying the flood season is approaching and QUOTE “the clear and present danger is yours to mitigate.”

Brewster County is holding an electronic waste collection day this weekend.
Bring your old electronics – from printers and computers to TVs and fax machines – to the Brewster County Road and Bride yard in Terlingua, where they’ll be safely recycled and disposed of.
The e-waste collection day takes place Saturday, June 13 from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.

Later this summer, the Borderlands Research Institute at Sul Ross will host a three-day conference about tackling issues, strengthening partnerships and sustaining lands to support wildlife across Texas.
BRI, along with the Texas Wildlife Association and Texas Parks and Wildlife, will bring together landowners, industry experts, and like-minded conservationists to cover emerging issues in the Trans-Pecos, big game and non-game research and management, applied management, and land stewardship.
The Trans-Pecos Wildlife Conference takes place August 5 through 7 at the Morgan Center at Sul Ross.

Yolanda Parras Márquez, quien residió en Alpine durante toda su vida, ha fallecido a los 74 años de edad.
Yolanda contrajo matrimonio con Reymario Márquez, oriundo de Sanderson, con quien tuvo dos hijos. Tras el fallecimiento de su esposo en 1979, Yolanda siguió dedicándose a criar a su familia con fortaleza, amor y determinación. Más tarde, se casó con Ramón Yniguez, de Alpine, con quien compartió muchos años de compañía y amor.
A lo largo de su vida, Yolanda fue reconocida por su gran ética de trabajo y su dedicación al servicio de la comunidad. Trabajó para American National Insurance y posteriormente para la Autoridad de Vivienda de Alpine (Alpine Housing Authority), donde forjó relaciones duraderas y se ganó el respeto y la amistad de muchos compañeros y residentes.
A Yolanda le sobreviven su amado esposo, Ramón Yniguez; dos hijos; una hermana; tres nietos; un bisnieto; y una bisnieta que está por nacer. También le sobreviven numerosos sobrinos, familiares y amigos que extrañarán profundamente su presencia.
Los servicios funerarios para Yolanda están programados para mañana (jueves), 11 de junio, comenzando con el velatorio en la funeraria Alpine Memorial Funeral Home, de 1:00 p. m. a 9:00 p. m.
La misa funeral se celebrará el viernes 12 de junio de 2026 a las 10:00 a. m. en la iglesia católica nuestra señora de la paz, en Alpine.

Anoche (martes), los funcionarios de la ciudad de Alpine votaron por unanimidad destituir de su cargo al secretario municipal Geoffrey “Geo” Calderon.
Calderon fue arrestado a principios de este mes (junio) y enfrenta múltiples cargos por delitos graves, entre ellos posesión de una sustancia controlada y resistencia al arresto.
El concejal Richard Portillo cito: “Propongo que el concejo municipal destituya del cargo al secretario municipal Geo Calderon y ordene a la administración de la ciudad proceder a la terminación de su empleo con efecto a partir de mañana, 10 de junio”.
Calderon trabajaba para la ciudad desde 2018. Fue nombrado secretario municipal en el 2021.
El martes por la noche, el concejo municipal también nombró a Clarinda Espinoza como secretaria municipal interina.

Funcionarios municipales de Presidio han dirigido una carta a autoridades del gobierno federal solicitando la retirada del alambre de concertina instalado en una zona inundable a lo largo del Río Grande.
Ante la posibilidad de inundaciones, los funcionarios señalan que el alambre representa una amenaza y afirman —cito— que es inminente un “daño significativo para los residentes, trabajadores y visitantes de la zona”.
El grupo envió la carta al comisionado de Aduanas y Protección Fronteriza, Rodney Scott, y al mayor general Curtis Taylor, comandante de la Fuerza de Tarea Conjunta de la Frontera Sur.
Concluyen la carta señalando que se acerca la temporada de inundaciones y —cito— que “les corresponde a ustedes mitigar este peligro claro e inminente”.

El condado de Brewster organizará una jornada de recolección de residuos electrónicos este fin de semana.
Lleve sus aparatos electrónicos viejos —desde impresoras y computadoras hasta televisores y máquinas de fax— a las instalaciones del Departamento de Carreteras y Puentes del condado de Brewster en Terlingua, donde serán reciclados y desechados de manera segura.
La jornada de recolección de residuos electrónicos tendrá lugar el sábado 13 de junio, de 9:00 a. m. a 1:00 p. m.

Más adelante este verano, el Borderlands Research Institute (BRI) de Sul Ross organizará una conferencia de tres días centrada en abordar desafíos, fortalecer alianzas y conservar las tierras para apoyar a la vida silvestre en todo Texas.
El BRI, en colaboración con la Texas Wildlife Association y el Texas Parks and Wildlife, reunirá a propietarios de tierras, expertos del sector y conservacionistas con intereses afines para tratar temas emergentes en la región de Trans-Pecos, la investigación y el manejo de especies de caza mayor y otras especies, la gestión aplicada y la administración responsable de la tierra.
La Conferencia sobre Vida Silvestre de Trans-Pecos se llevará a cabo del 5 al 7 de agosto en el Morgan Center de Sul Ross.
