Michelle Brito Urquidez, who lived a life defined by love, kindness, and selflessness, passed away late last month (MAY). She was 54.
Michelle had a remarkable gift for putting others before herself and making everyone around her feel welcome, valued, and cared for. Whether through a thoughtful gesture, a listening ear, or words of encouragement, she touched countless lives with her compassion and generosity. Some people leave behind accomplishments, others leave behind possessions. Michelle, left behind something far greater: love.
Born in Alpine, Michelle built a life centered on family, friendship, and service to others. She was a devoted mother and friend who taught her family the importance of faith, prayer, forgiveness, and unconditional love. Her life was a blessing, her memory a treasure, and her love a gift that will remain in our hearts forever.
A faithful servant of the Lord, Michelle lived her life as an example of Christian love, humility, and compassion. She shared her faith not only through words but through countless acts of kindness, generosity, and service to others. Her unwavering trust in God sustained her through life’s joys and challenges and inspired all who knew her.
Michelle will forever be missed, forever be loved, and forever remain a part of who her family is.
Visitation services are Friday, June 5 from 1:30 to 8:00 p.m. at Alpine Memorial Funeral Home. A celebration of life for Michelle will be the following day, June 6 from 2:00 to 3:00 p.m. with a burial to follow at Holy Angels Cemetery.

Agave Festival Marfa kicks off tomorrow (THURSDAY), and will bring together people from across the region and beyond for a celebration of the agave and its influence on culture.
Tim Johnson is the festival’s organizer. He spoke to KVLF earlier this week about the event and what inspired it: the agave lechuguilla, which is an indicator species for the Chihuahuan Desert.
JOHNSON1: “When you see that plant it sort of tells you roughly where you are in the world, and also it can sort of indicate the health of that region environmentally. I thought that was quite interesting that a plant can be like a way to, sort of, tell us where we are.” (0:15)
Each year, the fest brings people together authors, historians, botanists, artists, anthropologists and archaeologists for programming.
This year’s lineup includes Jasmine Ulloa (ooh-yoh-ah), a journalist and author of the book, El Paso: 5 families and 100 years of blood, migration, race and memory.
JOHNSON2: Basically, it begins at the Walmart shooting and thinking about how El Paso and the people of El Paso were conceived by a fellow American as something foreign and dangerous. And that was obviously shook a lot, a lot of people up, because most of us who have had spent time in El Paso and know and love El Paso understand El Paso as a kind of beautiful representation of this country and of American culture. She’s basically thinking about that moment and thinking about El Paso as a different kind of Ellis Island.” (0:31)
Other speakers at this year’s festival include members of Big Bend Conservation Alliance and Yuri de la Rosa, a well-known Mexican archeologist.
The event will also include a performance by Carrie Rodriguez and the band Pima Express.
The festival runs from Thursday, June 4 to Sunday, June 7. Most events are free and open to the public.

The city of Alpine has placed city secretary Geoffrey “Geo” Calderon on administrative leave with pay following his arrest this weekend.
Calderon is facing multiple charges, including possession of a controlled substance and resisting arrest.
Speaking during last night’s (TUESDAY’S) city council meeting, city manager Henry Arredondo said he intended to speak with Calderon and didn’t want to make any “knee jerk” reactions.
ARREDONDO1: “We’re still collecting information regarding the situation. At a further time, we’ll meet – maybe the next council meeting – and if we have to discuss anything then, we’ll place an item on the agenda.”
At the start of the meeting, Mayor Catherine Eaves said the city takes all matters involving public trust and accountability seriously.

Next week, council member Rick Stephens is hosting town hall for residents of Ward 5.
The meeting comes as the city is approaching the budget cycle for the upcoming fiscal year. Stephens said he’s looking to get feedback on several topics, including priorities for the general fund, proposed capital expenditures, and the potential for the city taking on debt.
The meeting will be Monday, June 15 at 5:30 p.m. at the Bread Garden Bakery, located at 801 E. Holland Ave.

This weekend, head to the Alpine Public Library for their inaugural putt putt golf weekend.
For just two days in June, the library will transform into a mini-golf course, providing fun for the whole family. The first day for putt putt at the library will be Saturday, June 6 from 10:00 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Saturday night, from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. will be reserved for golfers 21 and up – and wine and beer will be included. The second day for family fun will be Sunday, June 7 from 1:00 to 5:00 p.m.
All ages and skill levels are welcome. Tickets are $5 per person or $25 for the family. And even if you pay one time, you can play both days.

Michelle será extrañada por siempre, amada eternamente y permanecerá para siempre como parte de la identidad de su familia.

La ciudad de Alpine ha puesto al secretario municipal, Geoffrey “Geo” Calderon, en licencia administrativa con goce de sueldo tras su arresto este fin de semana.
Calderon enfrenta múltiples cargos, entre ellos posesión de una sustancia controlada y resistencia al arresto.
Al intervenir durante la reunión del concejo municipal celebrada anoche (martes), el administrador de la ciudad, Henry Arredondo, declaró que tenía la intención de hablar con Calderon y que no deseaba tener ninguna reacción “precipitada”.
cito: “Todavía estamos recopilando información con respecto a la situación. Más adelante —quizás en la próxima reunión del concejo— nos reuniremos y, si fuera necesario tratar algún asunto en ese momento, incluiremos un punto en la agenda”.

Durante solo dos días del mes de junio, la biblioteca se transformará en un campo de minigolf, ofreciendo diversión para toda la familia. El primer día de minigolf en la biblioteca será el sábado 6 de junio, de 10:00 a. m. a 5:30 p. m. La noche del sábado, de 6:00 p. m. a 8:00 p. m., estará reservada para golfistas mayores de 21 años; además, se incluirán vino y cerveza. El segundo día de diversión familiar será el domingo 7 de junio, de 1:00 p. m. a 5:00 p. m.
Se da la bienvenida a personas de todas las edades y niveles de habilidad. Las entradas tienen un costo de $5 por persona o $25 por familia. Y lo mejor de todo: con un solo pago, podrá jugar ambos días.
