Vickee Lee Wilcox peacefully passed away in Alpine on May 5. She was 74. Her life was marked by grace, dedication, and a spirit that touched many hearts throughout her journey.
Vickee’s early years were shaped by her education in Marfa, where she attended school, and later at St. Mary’s University in San Antonio. These formative experiences laid a foundation for a life filled with service, family, and community involvement.
She devoted much of her life to being a loving housewife and nurturing mother, but also embraced meaningful roles beyond the home. In her earlier years, Vickee managed the RV park at Yellowstone National Park, a place where many travelers found warmth and welcome under her care. Later, she extended her spirit of service to the Marfa Museum thrift store, managing it with a dedication that reflected her generous heart and tireless work ethic.
One of Vickee’s most cherished memories was her marriage to Steve Wilcox on November 22, 2000. Their wedding was uniquely unforgettable, held on a freight train where the train authorities graciously halted the journey for an hour to allow their ceremony to unfold.
Vickee is lovingly remembered by her husband, Steve Wilcox; her son; her three grandchildren and a great grandchild. She also holds a special place in the hearts of her stepdaughter and her family.
Though her presence has departed from this world, the echoes of Vickee’s kindness, dedication, and unique spirit will resonate in the hearts of all who knew her.
The family wishes to express their gratitude for the love and support during this time of loss.
They kindly ask that, in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the Friends of the Marfa Public Library in Marfa, continuing the legacy of nurturing community and knowledge that Vickee so deeply valued.

Beginning tomorrow (TUESDAY), forecasters with the National Weather Service in Midland say a cold front will work its way through the region, bringing with it cooler temperatures and a chance for rain in the Permian Basin and Trans Pecos this week.
Cody Lindsey is a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Midland.
LINDSEY1: “Right now, it looks like, officially in the forecast, we have about a 30-40 percent chance for thunderstorms coming into the forecast by Wednesday afternoon for both Marfa and Alpine.” (0:10)
Lindsey says with the cold front in place, some of those storms may become strong or severe.
Forecasters say Wednesday and Thursday will see the best chances for rain.

Tomorrow (TUESDAY), the city of Alpine will hold its next council meeting.
According to an agenda, council members are set to discuss repairs, infrastructure improvements and overall progress on a project to fix the city pool. They’ll also consider a plan for the pool for the upcoming summer swim season. Council members are also set to consider a resolution to increase water utility rates to help cover debt taken to pay for a new municipal well, which could cost up to $1 million.

This week, the Brewster County Groundwater Conservation District, which manages groundwater resources in Brewster County, holds its next meeting.
According to an agenda for the district’s meeting, the group will go over the district management plan, the district audit and will discuss sending out well surveys and registrations to people within the district.

The Big Bend Arts Council is calling on all artists to submit work for their next show “Landscapes, Near and Far.”
The show’s theme – any original artwork that is landscape in theme or open media. The take-in deadline for the show is June 2 at Big Bend Gallery, located at 121 W. Holland Ave. Artwork may be brought in before the end of the workday, the gallery’s open Thursday through Tuesday, from 11:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
An opening reception for the show is Friday, June 5 from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. at the gallery.

At the end of the month, Big Bend Telephone will host their third annual golf tournament at the Alpine Country Club.
The tournament is a three-person scramble with 27 overall teams competing for the top spot. Entry is $85 per person and proceeds benefit the Alpine Humane Society.
The scramble is May 30 with tee off beginning at 9:00 a.m.

Vickee Lee Wilcox falleció pacíficamente en Alpine el 5 de mayo. Tenía 74 años. Su vida estuvo marcada por la gracia, la dedicación y un espíritu que tocó muchos corazones a lo largo de su trayectoria.

Esta semana, el Distrito de Conservación de Aguas Subterráneas del Condado de Brewster —entidad que gestiona los recursos hídricos subterráneos en dicho condado— celebrará su próxima reunión.

El Consejo de las Artes de Big Bend (Big Bend Arts Council) hace un llamado a todos los artistas para que presenten sus obras para su próxima exposición, titulada «Landscapes, Near and Far» (Paisajes: cercanos y lejanos).

A finales de este mes, Big Bend Telephone organizará su tercer torneo anual de golf en el Alpine Country Club.
