Lilia Vasquez Prieto, a devoted homemaker and cherished caregiver, passed away peacefully at her home in Marfa on May 12. She was 95.
Lilia’s life was marked by a deep commitment to nurturing those around her and a sincere devotion to her family and community.
Throughout her life, Lilia embraced her role as a homemaker with a loving heart–dedicating much of her life to creating a warm and welcoming home. As a caregiver for children, Lilia touched the lives of many children with her kindness and gentle spirit. Those who knew her fondly remember her passion for making blankets and for her love of cooking and baking.
Lilia was recognized not only as a loving mother and grandmother but also as a steadfast friend to many. Her generous spirit and nurturing nature left an indelible impression on all whose lives she touched, embodying the virtues of compassion and care.
Lilia’s legacy is one of steadfast love, care, and devotion. She leaves behind a family enriched by her presence. Her memory will continue to be a source of comfort and strength to all who were fortunate to know her.
Lilia is survived by her daughter, five grandchildren, as well as many nieces and nephews who carry forward her legacy of kindness and family values.
The community will have the opportunity to pay their respects and celebrate Lilia’s life next week on Tuesday, May 19 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Marfa.
The visitation will begin at 9:00 a.m., followed by a rosary at 10:00 a.m. A Mass in remembrance of Lilia’s life will be held at 10:30 a.m., with a burial to follow at Cementerio de la Merced.

Franklin Mountains State Park in El Paso is set to grow following a recent 1,000 acre addition of public land.
According to Texas Parks and Wildlife Department, the new acquisition will help protect the area of the mountains where desert bighorn sheep are often found. Park officials say the pristine views of the Franklin Mountains won’t be obstructed by urban development thanks to the new land.
The park’s superintendent Cesar Mendez, says in addition to providing a “buffer zone” the new land will add lower elevation and flatter land to the park.

As part of its effort to build more barriers along the southwest border, the federal government is suing a Catholic Diocese for 14 acres of land outside of El Paso.
That’s according to the Texas Tribune.
The land rests at the bottom of Mount Cristo Rey, where every year thousands of people scale the mountain as part of a religious pilgrimage. At the summit, a 29-foot-tall statute of Jesus Christ looks over El Paso, Sunland Park, New Mexico and Ciudad Juárez in Mexico.
According to the Tribune, the federal government argues that they need the land to install barriers to secure the border. The church said the effort violates its First Amendment right to religious expression.

Next week, the city of Alpine will hold its next council meeting.
According to an agenda, council members are set to discuss repairs, infrastructure improvements and overall progress on a project to fix the city pool.
And in light of recent mandatory water restrictions, the city will also consider and approve of a plan for the pool for the summer swim season. Council members are also set to consider a resolution increasing water utility rates to help the city cover debt taken to pay for a new municipal well, which could cost up to $1 million.

At the end of the month (MAY), Big Bend Telephone will host their third annual golf tournament at the Alpine Country Club.
The tournament is a three-person scramble with 27 overall teams competing for the top spot. Entry is $85 per person and proceeds benefit the Alpine Humane Society.
The scramble is May 30 with tee off beginning at 9:00 a.m.

Lilia Vasquez Prieto, una dedicada ama de casa y querida cuidadora, falleció pacíficamente en su hogar en Marfa el 12 de mayo. Tenía 95 años.
La vida de Lilia estuvo marcada por un profundo compromiso con el cuidado de quienes la rodeaban y una sincera devoción hacia su familia y su comunidad.
A lo largo de su vida, Lilia asumió su rol de ama de casa con un corazón amoroso, dedicando gran parte de su existencia a crear un hogar cálido y acogedor. Como cuidadora de niños, Lilia tocó las vidas de muchos pequeños con su bondad y su espíritu gentil. Quienes la conocieron recuerdan con cariño su pasión por confeccionar mantas, así como su amor por la cocina y la repostería.
A Lilia le sobreviven su hija y cinco nietos, así como numerosos sobrinos que continúan llevando adelante su legado de bondad y valores familiares.
La comunidad tendrá la oportunidad de rendir sus respetos y celebrar la vida de Lilia la próxima semana, el martes 19 de mayo, en la Iglesia Católica St. Mary’s en Marfa.
El velorio comenzará a las 9:00 a. m., seguido de un rosario a las 10:00 a. m. Se celebrará una misa en memoria de la vida de Lilia a las 10:30 a. m., seguida del sepelio en el Cementerio de la Merced.

El Parque Estatal Franklin Mountains, en El Paso, está listo para expandirse tras la reciente incorporación de 1.000 acres de tierras públicas.
Según el Departamento de Parques y Vida Silvestre de Texas, esta nueva adquisición ayudará a proteger la zona de las montañas donde suelen encontrarse los borregos cimarrones del desierto. Los funcionarios del parque afirman que las vistas prístinas de las montañas Franklin no se verán obstruidas por el desarrollo urbano gracias a estos nuevos terrenos.
El superintendente del parque, César Méndez, señala que, además de proporcionar una “zona de amortiguamiento”, los nuevos terrenos añadirán al parque áreas de menor elevación y topografía más llana.

Como parte de su esfuerzo por construir más barreras a lo largo de la frontera suroeste, el gobierno federal ha demandado a una diócesis católica para adquirir 14 acres de terreno ubicados en las afueras de El Paso.

El terreno se encuentra en la base del Monte Cristo Rey, donde cada año miles de personas ascienden a la cima como parte de una peregrinación religiosa. En la cumbre, una estatua de Jesucristo de 29 pies de altura domina las vistas de El Paso, Sunland Park (Nuevo México) y Ciudad Juárez (México).
Según el *Tribune*, el gobierno federal argumenta que necesita estos terrenos para instalar barreras con el fin de asegurar la frontera. La Iglesia, por su parte, ha declarado que esta iniciativa viola su derecho a la libertad de expresión religiosa, consagrado en la Primera Enmienda.
