Manuel Sotelo Baeza Jr. – who went by “Beer” to those who knew him – passed away on April 23 in Marfa. He was 87.
Manuel was born in Marfa, where he graduated from high school in 1959. He married the love of his life, Maria Rosa Villanueva on November 27, 1963, in his hometown. He worked as a maintenance mechanic for the United States Border Patrol for 17 years before getting injured on the job.
He served in the United States Army and was awarded several service medals as well as an honorable discharge.
He was a proud member of Saint Mary’s church and would volunteer when needed. He spent 57 beautiful years with the love of his life “Guera.” He truly loved her and missed her greatly after her passing.
Manuel was an avid Dallas Cowboys fan and never failed to watch them play, proudly wearing his jersey on gameday. He cherished spending time with his children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren. He also took great pride in the upkeep of his rose garden and backyard.
He will be truly missed as he has made a huge impact on his family’s lives.
Manuel Sotelo Baeza is survived by his five children, 10 grandchildren and 19 great-grandchildren.
Services for Manuel will be tomorrow (FRIDAY) from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. at the Alpine Memorial Funeral Home Chapel.
The rosary will be Saturday at 10:00 a.m. with the funeral mass immediately following at Saint Mary’s Catholic Church in Marfa. Burial will follow at Saint Mary’s Catholic Cemetery.

According to the city of Alpine, the municipal well that failed recently had the potential to QUOTE “impact the city’s overall water supply and distribution system.”
In a press release explaining the decision to move to stage three water restrictions, the city said the well’s condition “presented an urgent concern requiring a higher-level response.”
The well failure underscores a growing issue across the state of Texas – aging water infrastructure in need of repair or replacement.
In an interview with KVLF, Alpine Mayor said the council is aware of the infrastructure needs and is currently strategizing on the best way forward.
EAVES2: “Repairs should’ve been made, replacements should’ve been made 10, 20 years ago. The can has been kicked down the road for many decades now, as far as repairing our water infrastructure, and finally that can has kicked the wall and we’re going to have to do something.” (0:19)
In a report last year, the American Society of Civil Engineers gave the state’s drinking water infrastructure a score of D+.
Among other things, the city’s Stage 3 water restrictions call for residents and businesses to limit watering to the morning between 6:00 and 8:00 and the evening between 8:00 and 10:00 p.m.

Next week, as part of National Teacher Appreciation Week, Sul Ross State University will hold a special event recognizing teachers throughout the Big Bend Region.
The eighth annual Celebration of Teaching will be at the Museum of the Big Bend. There will be music, food, awards and games. Every teacher – current and retired – is welcomed to attend and will receive a rose at the celebration.
Jennifer Miller-Ray is a professor at Sul Ross and talked to KVLF earlier this week about the event.
MILLER-RAY1: “You know, every one of us can remember a special teacher in our lives. And this is an opportunity where we can go and thank a teacher in person. Many of the local teachers are Sul Ross graduates – so they’re alumni – and we are very proud of our former students in the College of Education and the service they provide their community.” (0:21)
As part of the event, there will be a screening of “Relationships Matter,” a video featuring teachers in each of the school districts in the region and one of their students.
The special event happens Wednesday, May 6 at the Museum of the Big Bend at 4:30 p.m.

Beginning this week, you can schedule a bulk trash pick-up with the city of Alpine.
The city will haul away your trash next week, and you’ll have until Friday, May 1 before noon to schedule your pick up.
Each household is limited to 5 items or 3 cubic yards worth items to be picked up.

Manuel Sotelo Baeza Jr. —conocido como “Beer” entre quienes lo conocían— falleció el 23 de abril en Marfa. Tenía 87 años.
Manuel nació en Marfa, donde se graduó de la escuela preparatoria en 1959. Contrajo matrimonio con el amor de su vida, Maria Rosa Villanueva, el 27 de noviembre de 1963 en su ciudad natal. Trabajó como mecánico de mantenimiento para la Patrulla Fronteriza de los Estados Unidos durante 17 años, antes de sufrir una lesión en el trabajo.
Sirvió en el Ejército de los Estados Unidos y fue condecorado con varias medallas de servicio, además de recibir una baja honorable.
Se le extrañará profundamente, pues dejó una huella imborrable en la vida de su familia.
A Manuel Sotelo Baeza le sobreviven sus cinco hijos, 10 nietos y 19 bisnietos.
Los servicios fúnebres para Manuel se llevarán a cabo mañana (VIERNES), de 9:00 a. m. a 4:00 p. m., en la capilla de la Funeraria Alpine Memorial.
El rosario se rezará el sábado a las 10:00 a. m., seguido inmediatamente por la misa fúnebre en la Iglesia Católica de Saint Mary, en Marfa. El sepelio tendrá lugar a continuación en el Cementerio Católico de Saint Mary.

Según la ciudad de Alpine, el pozo municipal que falló recientemente tenía el potencial de —y citamos— «afectar el suministro general de agua y el sistema de distribución de la ciudad».
En un comunicado de prensa en el que se explicaba la decisión de pasar a la fase tres de restricciones de agua, la ciudad declaró que el estado del pozo «planteaba una preocupación urgente que requería una respuesta de mayor nivel».
La avería del pozo pone de relieve un problema creciente en todo el estado de Texas: el envejecimiento de la infraestructura hídrica, la cual necesita ser reparada o reemplazada.
En una entrevista con KVLF, el alcalde de Alpine afirmó que el concejo es consciente de las necesidades de infraestructura y que actualmente está elaborando una estrategia para determinar el mejor camino a seguir.
cito: «Las reparaciones deberían haberse realizado —y los reemplazos también— hace 10 o 20 años. Se ha estado postergando el problema durante muchas décadas en lo que respecta a la reparación de nuestra infraestructura hídrica; finalmente, ese problema ha chocado contra un muro y ahora tendremos que tomar medidas».
En un informe publicado el año pasado, la Sociedad Estadounidense de Ingenieros Civiles otorgó a la infraestructura de agua potable del estado una calificación de D+.
Entre otras disposiciones, las restricciones de agua de la Fase 3 de la ciudad exigen que tanto los residentes como las empresas limiten el riego a las horas de la mañana —entre las 6:00 y las 8:00 a. m.— y a las horas de la noche —entre las 8:00 y las 10:00 p. m.—.

La próxima semana, como parte de la Semana Nacional de Agradecimiento a los Maestros, la Universidad Estatal Sul Ross celebrará un evento especial para reconocer a los docentes de toda la región de Big Bend.
La octava edición anual de la «Celebración de la Enseñanza» tendrá lugar en el Museo de Big Bend. Habrá música, comida, entrega de premios y juegos. Todos los maestros —tanto en activo como jubilados— están invitados a asistir y recibirán una rosa durante la celebración.
Jennifer Miller-Ray, profesora de Sul Ross, conversó con la emisora KVLF a principios de esta semana sobre el evento.
