Paul B. Evans of Alpine passed away suddenly on April 13. He was 72.
Paul was born in Canadian, Texas and was a graduate of La Marque High School in 1971. He attended Sul Ross State University for two years before enlisting in the United States Army in 1973 where he served as a military policeman in South Korea and Colorado before returning to Sul Ross, where he graduated in 1976 with a degree in criminal justice.
Paul served as a Deputy Sheriff in Brewster County and served in the same capacity in Reeves County where he met his future wife, Celia in 1979. He then served as a deputy United States Marshall from 1983 until his retirement in 2009.
Paul was an avid outdoorsman who enjoyed hunting, shooting and fishing. He was a passionate student of Texas history and genealogy. His ability to tell a story was exceptional. Paul was completely devoted to his family and loved spending time with his sons, daughters and granddaughters.
Paul is survived by his wife of 45 years Celia Evans; his two sons; two daughters; and three granddaughters; two sisters and a niece and nephew.
Visitation services for Paul will be at Alpine Memorial Funeral Home Chapel on Sunday, April 19 from 5:00 to 6:00 p.m., with the rosary recitation beginning at 6:00 p.m.
A funeral Mass will take place on Monday, April 20 at 10:30 a.m. at Our Lady of Peace Catholic Church in Alpine with a funeral meal to follow at the Parish Hall.

The 35th annual Alpine Gem and Mineral show kicked off today (FRIDAY). The show will continue through the weekend and features over 50 vendors who will have rocks, rough and finished stones and beads. One vendor will even have meteorites.
The Gem and Mineral show is free and open to the public and will be held at the Alpine Civic Center.
On Friday and Saturday, the doors open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., and on Sunday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

This weekend, the Marathon Chamber of Commerce hosts West Texas Wingwatch, a birding adventure with Dr. Alejandro Chávez Treviño from the Borderlands Research Institute.
Participants will meet on Saturday, April 18 and again on Sunday, April 19 at 7:30 a.m. at the V6 Coffee Shop in Marathon. The event is free and open to the republic and registration isn’t required.
You will need to bring your own binoculars, lunch and transportation.

This weekend, the Food Pantry of Jeff Davis invites the public to Harvest Bowl.
The fundraiser event is tomorrow (SATURDAY) from 5:00 to 7:30 p.m. in Fort Davis at the newly opened community center.
Tickets for the event are $20 for adults. Children 12 years old and younger enter for free. You can purchase your tickets online at givebutter.com/harvest-bowl-2026.

On Tuesday, local officials will hold the next city council meeting.
According to an agenda for the meeting, council members are set to discuss the status of repairs and improvements to the city pool, and they’ll also talk about extending the pool season and operating hours. Officials will also talk about the joint use of Manuel Payne field between the city and Alpine ISD.
The city council will also adopt a new city logo to be used in public communications, marketing and branding efforts

Next month, Alpine Fire Rescue is hosting their annual spaghetti dinner fundraiser.
The dinner will be prepared and served by Alpine Firefighters – and plates are $12 each.
Proceeds from the event will go to Alpine Fire Rescue, and table donations will go toward the AVFD Junior Fire program.
Tickets can be purchased from any Alpine Firefighter, or at Traci’s Vapor Emporium.
The spaghetti dinner will be May 2 at the American Legion in Alpine from 6:00 to 9:00 p.m.

La 35.ª edición anual de la Exposición de Gemas y Minerales de Alpine dio comienzo hoy. El martes, los funcionarios locales celebrarán la próxima reunión del Concejo Municipal.

El próximo mes, el cuerpo de Bomberos y Rescate de Alpine (Alpine Fire Rescue) organizará su cena anual de espagueti con fines recaudatorios.
La cena será preparada y servida por los propios bomberos de Alpine, y el precio de cada plato será de $12.
Los fondos recaudados en el evento se destinarán a Alpine Fire Rescue, mientras que las donaciones recibidas en las mesas se canalizarán hacia el programa de Bomberos Juveniles (Junior Fire Program) del AVFD.
