It is with a heavy heart that the family of Glen Allen Pepper announces his passing on April 5 in San Antonio following a long illness.
He was 86.
Known to all as simply “Pepper,” he learned to love the land and learned the value of productive work and service while working the farm alongside his family. He joined the Air Force Reserves, serving in the 433rd Airlift Wing based in San Antonio. His love of the air rivaled his love of the land and Pepper later owned and flew his own airplanes.
Pepper married Donna Davenport Thrift in 1968 and they raised three children.
At the age of 27, Pepper took the opportunity to purchase an abandoned mercury mine in Terlingua. He went to work repurposing the rock cottages and main headquarters for the mine, turning it into the first and only tourist destination at that time in the heart of the Chihuahuan Desert. Pepper renamed the abandoned mine as the “Villa de la Mina.” It operated as a magnet that brought tourists and characters from all walks of life into the beautiful desert he so loved.
Pepper found all kinds of ways to support his family and friends there in his desert paradise. He ran goat herds, gathered and sold candelilla wax, and ran the first commercial river raft trips down the Rio Grande.
Starting in 1976, and continuing for more than a decade, the Villa hosted C.A.S.I.’s annual Arriba Terlingua Chili Cookoff.
Pepper was, in short, the first modern pioneer of the Big Bend to offer tourism as a viable escape to adventure and fun.
A graveside service to celebrate Pepper’s life is planned for Saturday, April 18 at 10 a.m. at the Sabinal Cemetery, with a luncheon to follow at Hermann Sons Steak House in Hondo.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Lustgarten Foundation for Pancreatic Cancer Research.

The Center for Biological Diversity is again suing the federal government over its efforts to build a border wall in the Big Bend region.
The environmental group, along with the nonprofit Friends of Ruidosa Church and a local river guide, filed the suit today (THURSDAY), claiming the Department of Homeland Security unconstitutionally waived environmental and historic preservation laws to fast track border wall construction.
In part, the lawsuit argues the federal government violated a legal doctrine which calls for congressional approval for actions of major political or economic significance.
Last week, the Center for Biological Diversity and the Texas Civil Rights Project sued the federal government to obtain public records from U.S. Customs and Border Protection related to border wall construction.

This weekend, the Food Pantry of Jeff Davis invites the public to Harvest Bowl.
The fundraiser event is Saturday, April 18 from 5:00 to 7:30 p.m. in Fort Davis at the newly opened community center.

Later this month, the city of Alpine and the Texas Department of Transportation will hold a public meeting to hear about transportation needs and concerns within the city.
TxDOT is looking for public input on a mobility plan it’s putting together for the city. The department is looking to hear what you consider to be Alpine’s primary corridors, what the key transportation concerns, what safety issues you have, pedestrian and bicycle needs, and rail crossings.
The meeting will be Thursday, April 30 from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. at the city council chambers.

Next month (MAY), Brewster County will hold its annual countrywide cleanup event.
Brewster County trucks will visit several locations in the county and will accept your junk and rubbish. Some of what the county will pick up include furniture and household items, mattresses and bedding, some appliances, yard waste and tires. A separate trailer for tires will be available. All tires must have the wheels and rims removed.
The first bulk pickup in Terlingua on May 2 from 8:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. at the Road and Bridge Yard on FM170.
The next county pick up will be on May 9 in Marathon in Alpine from 8:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. The Marathon pickup will be at the Road and Bridge Yard on North Albert St., and the pickup in Alpine will be at the landfill.

“Lights Out, Texas,” a statewide campaign to reduce the mortality rates of migratory birds, is now underway.
Help birds that fly over Texas during their migratory season by turning off all non-essential lights at your home, building or any other structures from 11:00 p.m. to 6:00 a.m. each night. Lights Out Texas asks you don’t use landscape lighting for trees or gardens where birds may be resting. You can also close blinds at night to reduce the amount of light being emitted from windows.
The lights out campaign happens until June 15 for birds’ springtime migration.

TxDOT busca recibir la opinión del público sobre un plan de movilidad que está elaborando para la ciudad. El departamento desea saber cuáles considera usted que son los corredores principales de Alpine, cuáles son las preocupaciones clave en materia de transporte, qué problemas de seguridad ha observado, cuáles son las necesidades para peatones y ciclistas, y la situación de los cruces ferroviarios.
La reunión tendrá lugar el jueves 30 de abril, de 2:00 p. m. a 4:00 p. m., en la sala del Concejo Municipal.

El próximo mes (MAYO), el condado de Brewster llevará a cabo su evento anual de limpieza en todo el condado.
Los camiones del condado de Brewster visitarán varias ubicaciones dentro del condado y recibirán sus desechos y basura. «Lights Out, Texas» (Luces Apagadas, Texas), una campaña a nivel estatal para reducir las tasas de mortalidad de las aves migratorias, ya está en marcha.
