Former Texas Gov. Rick Perry will deliver the commencement address at Sul Ross State University this spring.
The school’s president, Carlos Hernandez, said Perry – who served as governor for 15 years – is QUOTE “an inspiring voice for our graduates as they begin the next chapter of their lives.”
The spring commencement takes place Friday May 8 at the Gallego Center, beginning at 4:00 p.m.

All this week, join McDonald Observatory in celebrating International Dark Sky Week and the region’s famously dark skies.
Events will be held through Sunday 19 at McDonald Observatory and in areas throughout the Big Bend, including Alpine, Fort Davis, Presidio and Terlingua.

And as part of the dark skies celebrations, Visit Alpine and Keep Alpine Beautiful are hosting an Earth Day and Dark Skies celebration.
There will be educational booths, a bouncy castle, a plant sale and live snakes too. The event is part of the Alpine Gem & Mineral Show.
It takes place Saturday April 18 at the Alpine Civic Center from 1:00 to 4:00 p.m.

This weekend, the 35th annual Alpine Gem and Mineral show kicks off, bringing together rock hunters and gem enthusiasts from across the region and beyond.
The show will feature over 50 vendors this year who will have rocks, rough and finished stones and beads. One vendor will even have meteorites.
Lisa Nix and Todd Sanborn spoke about this year’s event on KVLF.
Nix said this year’s event will feature some new additions.
NIX1: “Saturday, we’re teaming up with Earth Day and Dark Skies. There’ll be a street fair event on 12th street, which will be closed. And then also several presentations over at the library. We’ll be featuring Dr. Jesse Kelsch from Sul Ross. She’ll be doing a talk for us at 2 p.m., but there will be talks throughout the day there.” (0:24)
And then on Sunday, the gem and mineral show will have hourly door-prizes with a grand-prize announcement at 2 p.m.
The event is free and open to the public and will be held at the Alpine Civic Center.
On Friday and Saturday, the doors open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., and on Sunday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

This weekend, the Marathon Chamber of Commerce hosts West Texas Wingwatch, a birding adventure with Dr. Alejandro Chávez Treviño from the Borderlands Research Institute.
Participants will meet on Saturday, April 18 and again on Sunday, April 19 at 7:30 a.m. at the V6 Coffee Shop in Marathon. The event is free and open to the republic and registration isn’t required. You will need to bring your own binoculars, lunch and transportation.

On April 22, Alpine High School theater students will perform “Blood Wedding” at the Alpine ISD auditorium.
The performance starts at 7:00 p.m., and is free and open to the public.

The Big Bend Chapter of the Native Plant Society of Texas will hold a plant sale later this month (APRIL).
The group will have a variety of plants for sale, from native plants and cacti to perennials, flowering plants and shrubs.
The sale takes place Saturday, April 25 from 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. at 308 W. Ave E in Alpine.
Cash, checks and cards will be accepted.

Este fin de semana arranca la 35.ª edición anual de la Exposición de Gemas y Minerales de Alpine, reuniendo a buscadores de rocas y entusiastas de las gemas de toda la región y más allá.
Este año, la exposición contará con la participación de más de 50 vendedores que ofrecerán rocas, piedras tanto en bruto como talladas, y cuentas. Uno de los vendedores incluso tendrá meteoritos.

Nix comentó que la edición de este año incluirá algunas novedades.

El viernes y el sábado, las puertas estarán abiertas de 9 a. m. a 5 p. m., y el domingo, de 10 a. m. a 4 p. m.

El Capítulo Big Bend de la Sociedad de Plantas Nativas de Texas llevará a cabo una venta de plantas a finales de este mes (ABRIL).
El grupo ofrecerá a la venta una variedad de plantas, desde especies nativas y cactus hasta plantas perennes, plantas con flores y arbustos.
La venta tendrá lugar el sábado 25 de abril, de 9:00 a. m. a 2:00 p. m., en el 308 W. Ave E, en Alpine.
