Raymond Paul Janiczek (JAH-nih-check) passed away peacefully earlier this year at his home in Alpine. He was 81.
A celebration of life for Ray will be held this weekend.
Born in Gary, Indiana, Ray grew up among a large extended Polish family. After graduating from the Indiana Institute of Technology, he was recruited by Dow Chemical’s Texas division, spending his career in the Brazosport area.
After retiring, Ray traveled. And while in Alpine, he fell in love with the mountains, people, and dark skies–choosing this as his forever home.
Ray enjoyed reading and would often immerse himself in books on any subject that captured his interest, often reading technical manuals. Feeling most at home using tools and tinkering in his barn, with the backdrop of our beautiful mountains, Ray was in his happy place. Known for his remarkable ability to fix anything, he tackled each obstacle with a creative flair and ingenuity.
In 2020, Ray suffered a stroke that caused significant impairments, changing the course of his life. Because of his faith, he accepted these challenges with courage, dignity, and an open heart, leaving behind a legacy that will be cherished by those who knew him.
Ray is survived by his wife Teresa Peck, their loving son and two treasured grandchildren. He also leaves behind his sister and countless friends who will fondly remember him.
A celebration of life will be held on tomorrow (SATURDAY) at the Alpine Memorial Funeral Home Chapel in Alpine from 1:00 to 3:00 p.m.

Alpine ISD is set to receive a major investment that will reshape the district for years to come.
That’s according to the district’s superintendent Michelle Rinehart, who shared the news of a $650,000 funding boost on KVLF’s show “Buck Banter.”
Rinehart says the historic investment is from the Prentice and Alline (eye-LEAN) Brown Foundation.
RINEHART1: “Of that $650,000 donation, $390,000 of it goes to this one project, which we are so excited about and we are so in need of. And that is replacing classroom furniture at Alpine elementary school.” (0:17)
Rinehart says the current furniture at the elementary school is decades old, some of it even dating back to the 1960s.
The donation will also cover professional development for staff and will fund renovation efforts at the district’s theater and will provide for new music equipment.
The Brown Foundation made a significant donation to the district in 2024, which, in part, funded the new playground equipment at the elementary.

Beginning Monday, join McDonald Observatory in celebration of International Dark Sky Week with events planned throughout the region to recognize the region’s famous dark skies.
Events will be held Monday, April 13 through Sunday 19 at McDonald Observatory and in areas throughout the Big Bend, including Alpine, Fort Davis, Presidio and Terlingua.

Also next week, as part of the dark skies celebrations, Visit Alpine and Keep Alpine Beautiful are hosting an Earth Day and Dark Skies celebration.
There will be educational booths, a bouncy castle, a plant sale and live snakes too. The event is part of the Alpine Gem & Mineral Show.
It takes place Saturday April 18 at the Alpine Civic Center from 1:00 to 4:00 p.m.

Next weekend, the Museum of the Big Bend is hosting a ceremony to honor the latest recipients of the museum’s Heritage Award, Tom and Val Beard.
The Beards are longtime supporters of the Museum of the Big Bend and regard it as a necessary introduction to the history of our region and to the history of ranching in Far West Texas.
The ceremony is Saturday, April 18 at the museum’s Cultural Events Center. The cocktail reception for the event begins at 5:30 p.m. with dinner starting at 6:40 p.m.
Admission is $150 for museum members and $175 for nonmembers.

The Big Bend Chapter of the Native Plant Society of Texas will hold a plant sale later this month (APRIL).
The group will have a variety of plants for sale, from native plants and cacti to perennials, flowering plants and shrubs.
The sale takes place Saturday, April 25 from 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. at 308 W. Ave E in Alpine.
Cash, checks and cards will be accepted.

Later this month, Sul Ross State University will host the inaugural Borderlands Open Access Symposium.
The virtual event will bring together educators and researchers to talk about innovative teaching and research practices throughout the borderlands and beyond.
The event is Friday, April 24, from 10 a.m. to noon.

Raymond Paul Janiczek falleció pacíficamente a principios de este año en su hogar en Alpine. Tenía 81 años.
Este fin de semana se celebrará una ceremonia de conmemoración de la vida de Ray.
Nacido en Gary, Indiana, Ray creció rodeado de una gran familia polaca extendida. Tras graduarse en el Instituto Tecnológico de Indiana, fue reclutado por la división de Texas de Dow Chemical, desarrollando toda su carrera profesional en el área de Brazosport.
Tras jubilarse, Ray se dedicó a viajar. Y fue durante su estancia en Alpine cuando se enamoró de las montañas, de su gente y de sus cielos estrellados, eligiendo este lugar como su hogar definitivo.
En 2020, Ray sufrió un accidente cerebrovascular que le provocó secuelas significativas, cambiando el rumbo de su vida. Impulsado por su fe, aceptó estos desafíos con valentía, dignidad y el corazón abierto, dejando tras de sí un legado que será atesorado por todos aquellos que lo conocieron.
A Ray le sobreviven su esposa, Teresa Peck; su amado hijo; y sus dos adorados nietos. También deja atrás a su hermana y a un sinfín de amigos que lo recordarán con gran afecto.
La ceremonia de conmemoración de su vida se celebrará mañana (SÁBADO) en la capilla de la Funeraria Alpine Memorial, en Alpine, en un horario de 1:00 p. m. a 3:00 p. m.

El Distrito Escolar Independiente de Alpine (Alpine ISD) está a punto de recibir una importante inversión que transformará el distrito en los años venideros.
Así lo afirmó la superintendente del distrito, Michelle Rinehart, quien dio a conocer la noticia de un incremento de fondos de 650.000 dólares durante su participación en el programa «Buck Banter» de la emisora KVLF.
Rinehart señaló que esta histórica inversión proviene de la Fundación Prentice y Alline Brown.

Rinehart explicó que el mobiliario actual de la escuela primaria tiene décadas de antigüedad; de hecho, algunas piezas datan incluso de la década de 1960.
La donación también cubrirá programas de desarrollo profesional para el personal, financiará las obras de renovación del teatro del distrito y permitirá adquirir nuevos equipos para el área de música.
La Fundación Brown ya había realizado una importante donación al distrito en 2024, la cual sirvió, en parte, para financiar la adquisición de nuevos equipos para el patio de juegos de la escuela primaria.

A partir del lunes, únase al Observatorio McDonald para celebrar la Semana Internacional de los Cielos Oscuros, con eventos programados en toda la región para rendir homenaje a sus famosos cielos nocturnos.

El Capítulo del Big Bend de la Sociedad de Plantas Nativas de Texas (Native Plant Society of Texas) llevará a cabo una venta de plantas a finales de este mes (ABRIL).
El grupo pondrá a la venta una gran variedad de plantas, que abarcará desde especies nativas y cactus hasta plantas perennes, plantas con flores y arbustos.
La venta se realizará el sábado 25 de abril, de 9:00 a. m. a 2:00 p. m., en el 308 W. Ave E, en Alpine.

A finales de este mes, la Universidad Estatal Sul Ross será la sede del primer Simposio de Acceso Abierto de la Región Fronteriza.
Este evento virtual reunirá a educadores e investigadores para dialogar sobre prácticas innovadoras de enseñanza e investigación en toda la región fronteriza y más allá.
El evento se llevará a cabo el viernes 24 de abril, de 10:00 a. m. a 12:00 p. m.
