Monday, April 6 Morning News

Transcript:

Over the weekend, the group No Big Bend Wall held two demonstrations across the state to protest the construction of a wall along the border in the Big Bend area.

As Carlos Morales reports, the rallies were held at the edge of Santa Elena Canyon in Big Bend National Park and at the foot of the state capitol in Austin.

Across the two demonstrations, protestors held signs and waved flags that said things like – “Come and take it, save Big Bend” and “Protect Texas Land.”

Speaking in a video shared online before the rally at the state capitol, State Sen. Cesar Blanco said the region is important for the generations of families who have built their livelihoods along the border and is also a special place for people across the state. Blanco’s district includes the Big Bend.

BLANCO1: “At the end of the day this is about people, it’s about their stories and it’s about their future. Your voice matters, your story matters and this land matters. And when we stand together we can protect what we love, we can protect and save the Big Bend.” (0:14)

Recently, U.S. Customs and Border Protection updated their plans online for border walls in the region which now show “detection technology” planned for parks instead of a physical wall. Still, local officials are skeptical. Meanwhile, the online map shows CBP is still pursuing physical border walls along a stretch of the border in Hudspeth to Jeff Davis and Presidio counties.
