The city of Alpine has launched a new effort to address and mitigate flooding within the city.
The In-House Flood Mitigation Action Plan will see the city improve stormwater management and protect infrastructure in effort to improve public safety during severe flooding.
According to the city, the plan will see officials make practical, in-house solutions to address the problems the city sees when it floods. Among other things, the plan will see improvements made to drainage in known problem areas.
The city hopes that investing in these improvements can reduce repair costs in the future and also build a strong case for funding opportunities that would help with additional repairs and infrastructure improvements.

Starting Wednesday, the Small Business Development Center at Sul Ross State University will offer more training courses for entrepreneurs and their businesses.
The first training will help you determine the message you’re trying to make with your business and how to find the right audience. The session is intended for new entrepreneurs who want to launch with clarity and build real loyalty from day one. The webinar will be Wednesday, April 1 from 11 a.m. to noon.
The next training is Thursday, April 2 and will focus on small businesses and leveraging A.I. In this hands-on workshop, you’ll learn how to use Gemini to automate and streamline everyday business workflows so you can focus on growth instead of busy work.

This week, the National Weather Service is hosting a Skywarn presentation where you can learn how to identify weather patterns and tell the difference from a harmless cloud to a severe storm system.
The presentation will be Wednesday, April 1 at the Lucy Rede Franco Middle School in Presidio, located at 1515 Highland St. You’ll learn about severe weather, how to stay safe in severe weather and about the wild weather we typically see in West Texas. The presentation begins at 6:30 p.m.

This week, the Chihuahuan Desert Research Institute will host a lecture with biologist James Cornett, who will talk about his close encounter with a mountain lion.
Cornett lectures are always entertaining and informative, and this one promises to be no exception.
The presentation takes place Thursday, April 2 at 7 p.m. at The Crowley Theater in Marfa.

This is the last weekend in Alpine to get help with your taxes free of charge.
The service is provided by Sul Ross’ Rio Grande College of Business. The tax help is intended for low-income individuals, those with disability and limited English proficiency. The types of return the college will help with include simple 1040s, W2 income, social security income, retirement income and contract labor.
The tax help will be offered Saturday, April 4 from 9:00 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Centennial Building in Alpine, located at 500 W. Ave H, suite 112.

Later this month (APRIL), the Museum of the Big Bend is hosting a ceremony to honor the latest recipients of the museum’s Heritage Award, Tom and Val Beard.
The Beards are longtime supporters of the Museum of the Big Bend and regard it as a necessary introduction to the history of our region and to the history of ranching in Far West Texas.
The ceremony is Saturday, April 18 at the museum’s Cultural Events Center. The cocktail reception for the event begins at 5:30 p.m. with dinner starting at 6:40 p.m.
Admission is $150 for museum members and $175 for nonmembers.

La ciudad de Alpine ha puesto en marcha una nueva iniciativa para abordar y mitigar las inundaciones dentro del municipio.
El Plan de Acción Interno para la Mitigación de Inundaciones permitirá a la ciudad mejorar la gestión de las aguas pluviales y proteger la infraestructura, con el fin de reforzar la seguridad pública durante episodios de inundaciones severas.
Según las autoridades municipales, el plan contempla la implementación de soluciones prácticas y de gestión interna para hacer frente a los problemas que la ciudad experimenta cuando se producen inundaciones. Entre otras medidas, el plan incluirá mejoras en el sistema de drenaje en aquellas zonas que han sido identificadas como áreas problemáticas.
La ciudad confía en que la inversión en estas mejoras permita reducir los costos de reparación en el futuro y, al mismo tiempo, constituya un argumento sólido para acceder a oportunidades de financiamiento que faciliten la realización de reparaciones adicionales y mejoras en la infraestructura.

A partir del miércoles, el Centro de Desarrollo de Pequeñas Empresas (SBDC) de la Universidad Estatal Sul Ross ofrecerá más cursos de capacitación para emprendedores y sus negocios.
La primera capacitación le ayudará a definir el mensaje que desea transmitir con su negocio y a encontrar a la audiencia adecuada. Esta sesión está dirigida a nuevos emprendedores que desean iniciar sus proyectos con claridad y generar una lealtad genuina desde el primer día. Este servicio es proporcionado por el Rio Grande College of Business de Sul Ross. A finales de este mes (abril), el Museo del Big Bend celebrará una ceremonia para honrar a los más recientes galardonados con el Premio al Patrimonio del museo: Tom y Val Beard.
