Yolanda Martinez Salcido, of Fort Davis, passed away peacefully at Big Bend Regional Medical Center on March 16, surrounded by her beloved family. She was 72.
She was born in Alpine, but grew up in Fort Davis where she graduated from high school in 1974. She went on to work as an Administrative Assistant at High Frontier, where she dedicated 22 years of her life. She truly loved her job and the people she worked with, forming many close friendships over the years.
Yolanda also had a special heart for the residents at High Frontier and took pride in mentoring and supporting them.
Her greatest joy in life was her family. She loved her children and grandchildren deeply and was always there to cheer them on, whether it was at sporting events or rodeos.
Yolanda enjoyed crafting in her free time and never passed up a chance to visit a casino and play the slot machines.
She will be remembered for her kind heart, her strong love for her family, and the joy she brought to those around her.
She is survived by her husband, LeeRoy Salcido; her three children, five grandchildren, her sister and numerous cousins, nieces, and nephews.
Family visitation and rosary services will be held at Saint Joseph Catholic Church tomorrow (THURSDAY) from 4:00-7:00.
Services will be held at Saint Joseph Catholic Church, Fort Davis, at 10:30 a.m. on Friday.

A 73-year-old man from Lincoln, Nebraska died earlier this week while riding his bicycle on a tour through the Big Bend region.
That’s according to the Presidio County Sheriff’s Office, who said the man, Stanley Oswald, appeared to be suffering from a heart attack. The department says despite life-savings efforts made by the man’s friends and first responders, Oswald died of a suspected cardiac arrest.
The sheriff’s office encouraged individuals with any pre-existing health conditions to consult with a medical professional before taking in activities like hiking, biking or climbing in the Big Bend.

On the hike, you’ll learn about the beautiful Davis Mountains sky island ecosystem. Reservations and a high clearance vehicle are required.

On Saturday, the department of Geology at Sul Ross will host GeoFest, a daylong fundraiser and celebration.
The event will support Sul Ross geology students who are preparing for a summer capstone course. Previously, the program was supported by federal grants but those have been eliminated.
GeoFest will feature live music, activities for kids, food trucks, door prizes, and free beer specially brewed by Brick Vault for the event.
GeoFest takes place Saturday, March 21, from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. at Kokernot Lodge.
Entry is $8 for adults, $5 Sul Ross students, active-duty military and children from 2 to 12. The event is free for children under 2.

Also this weekend, ten former Sul Ross Lobos will be honored at the university’s 38th annual alumni gala.
On Saturday, March 21 distinguished alumni, rodeo exes, athletes and friends will be inducted into the Hall of Honor. The evening will begin with a cocktail reception at 5:30 p.m., followed by dinner and the ceremony.
Tickets are $75 for adults and $25 for children under the age of 12.
The event will be at the Gallego Center in Alpine.

Next month (APRIL), Sul Ross State University will host an informational session for students interested in the school’s doctorate in educational leadership program.
The virtual meeting will be held Wednesday, April 1, from 5:00 to 6:00 p.m. The session will provide an overview of the program and faculty will be there to answer questions about admissions and coursework.
The program is designed specifically for superintendents, principals and school leaders, particularly those serving communities in rural Texas and in areas along the borderland
Prospective students attending the session will also learn about the program structure, expectations for doctoral candidates and opportunities to collaborate with fellow education professionals.

The city will haul away your trash the week of April 6. And you’ll have between Monday, March 30 and Friday, April 3 before noon to schedule your pick up.
Each household is limited to 5 items or 3 cubic yards worth items to be picked up.

Yolanda Martínez Salcido, de Fort Davis, falleció pacíficamente en el Centro Médico Regional Big Bend el 16 de marzo, rodeada de su amada familia. Tenía 72 años.
Nació en Alpine, pero creció en Fort Davis, donde se graduó de la preparatoria en 1974. Trabajó como asistente administrativa en High Frontier, donde dedicó 22 años de su vida. Amaba profundamente su trabajo y a sus compañeros, con quienes forjó muchas amistades entrañables a lo largo de los años.
Su mayor alegría en la vida era su familia. Amaba profundamente a sus hijos y nietos y siempre estaba presente para animarlos, ya fuera en eventos deportivos o rodeos.
Será recordada por su bondad, su profundo amor por su familia y la alegría que transmitía a quienes la rodeaban.
Le sobreviven su esposo, LeeRoy Salcido; sus tres hijos, cinco nietos, su hermana y numerosos primos, sobrinas y sobrinos.
El velorio y el rosario se llevarán a cabo en la Iglesia Católica de San José mañana (jueves) de 4:00 p. m. a 7:00 p. m.
El funeral se celebrará en la Iglesia Católica de San José, en Fort Davis, a las 10:30 a. m. del viernes.
