Fourteen Alpine High School students are advancing to the state competition for solo and ensemble performances – the most Bucks to advance to the competition in five years.
The advancing groups include the clarinet trio, the saxophone trio and the percussion ensemble. The clarinet trio features Juan Longion, Megan Struthers, and Jake Vega. The saxophone group is made up of Andrea Johnson, John Paul Prieto, and Dylan Wang. And the percussion ensemble features Rylen Driscol, Reyna Martinez, Abram Portillo, Alice Saunders, Abigail Scott, Leah Struthers, Gus Thompson and Cain Vidal.
Each ensemble received a “superior” rating for their performances.
The state solo and ensemble contest will be held May 23 and May 25 in Austin.

The Texas Department of Transportation is holding a series of public meetings in Far West Texas next month (MARCH) on transportation projects.
The meetings will be in Van Horn, Presidio and Alpine – and attendees will have an opportunity to review and weigh-in on proposed priority projects coming to the region through the department’s rural transportation improvement program.
The first meeting will be in Van Horn on Wednesday, March 4 from 4 to 6 p.m. at the Hotel El Capitan.
The Alpine meeting is Tuesday, March 10 from 4 to 6 p.m. at the Alpine TxDot office. And the meeting in Presidio will be March 11 at the PAC.

The pet-rescue One Tail at a Time West Texas invites the public to attend the group’s fundraiser later this month (FEBRUARY).
On Saturday, February 28, starting at 5 p.m., head to the Sentinel in Marfa for food, drinks and music.
The organization serves several areas including Presidio, Van Horn and Alpine.

Next month, Sul Ross State University will hold a career fair for students looking for part-time, full-time, and internship work.
The career fair will be held Tuesday, March 3 at the Morgan University Center – on the first and second floors – from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.
The event is free and open to anyone in the community, whether they would like to attend or host a table.

Frontera de Salud is coming to West Texas to provide medical services for people with limited access to health care.
Frontera de Salud is a Texas Tech organization and will provide blood pressure and glucose screenings, school physicals, women’s health exams, ultrasounds, EKGs, testing for STDs and general check-ups.
Walk-ins are welcome, and the services are free.
The clinics will be next month (March). The first one is March 14 in Candelaria from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.
The next one will be in Alpine on March 15 from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. at the Presbyterian Church. On March 16, the group will be in Terlingua at Big Bend High School. And the last stop for Frontera de Salud will be in Fort Davis on March 17 at the community center.

Later this spring (April), the local nonprofit Alpine Community Projects will host its third community conversation on elder care in the region and how to provide for the Big Bend’s aging population.
The meeting is Wednesday, April 8 at 5:30 p.m. at the old schoolhouse.

Catorce estudiantes de la Escuela preparatoria de Alpine avanzan a la competencia estatal de solistas y conjuntos, la mayor cantidad de Bucks en avanzar a la competencia en cinco años.
Los grupos que avanzan incluyen el trío de clarinete, el trío de saxofones y el conjunto de percusión. El trío de clarinete está compuesto por Juan Longion, Megan Struthers y Jake Vega. El Departamento de Transporte de Texas llevará a cabo una serie de reuniones públicas en el extremo oeste de Texas el próximo mes (MARZO) sobre proyectos de transporte.

El grupo de rescate de mascotas One Tail at a Time West Texas invita al público a asistir a su evento de recaudación de fondos a finales de este mes (febrero).

Frontera de Salud llega al oeste de Texas para brindar servicios médicos a personas con acceso limitado a la atención médica.
Frontera de Salud es una organización de Texas Tech que ofrecerá exámenes de presión arterial y glucosa, exámenes físicos escolares, exámenes de salud femenina, ecografías, electrocardiogramas, pruebas de ETS y chequeos generales.
Se aceptan visitas sin cita previa y los servicios son gratuitos.
Las clínicas se realizarán el próximo mes (marzo). La primera será el 14 de marzo en Candelaria, de 11:00 a. m. a 4:00 p. m.
La siguiente será en Alpine, el 15 de marzo, de 2:00 p. m. a 6:00 p. m., en la Iglesia Presbiteriana. El 16 de marzo, el grupo estará en Terlingua, en la escuela preparatoria Big Bend. Y la última parada de Frontera de Salud será en Fort Davis, el 17 de marzo, en el centro comunitario.
