Texas Sen. Joan Huffman is looking to be Texas’ next attorney general.
Huffman has represented Harris County since 2008, and is one of the longest tenured state senators. In an interview with KVLF, Huffman said her experience as a criminal district judge and as a longtime prosecutor is what encouraged her to run to be the state’s top lawyer.
HUFFMAN1: “So I’ve worked on a lot of big issues that uniquely qualify me to serve as the attorney general of Texas.” (0:08)
Huffman is one of four Republican candidates up for vote this March. She’s running up against U.S. Congressman Chip Roy, who represents Texas’ 21st Congressional District.
She said, given the crowded primary field, she expects the race to go to a runoff.
HUFFMAN2: I feel like once I can make the runoff that there will be a stark contrast between me and whoever the other person might be.” (0:09)
Huffman said if voters take the time to familiarize themselves with her and her background , they’ll see she’s QUOTE an “extremely conservative state senator with Texans’ best interest at heart.”
If elected, Huffman would be the first female attorney general in Texas history.

The Davis Mountains State Park, Indian Lodge, and the Black Bear restaurant are hosting a job fair this weekend.
There are several openings, including cooking positions at the restaurant and custodial work at the Indian Lodge.
The first job fair is Saturday, February 7 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Presidio at the Presidio County Courthouse in Marfa. There will be another one on Sunday, at the same time, at the Alpine Visitor Center.
All jobs include healthcare benefits and paid time off.

Brewster County officials meet Tuesday for the next county commissioner’s meeting.
And according to an agenda for the meeting, Kayse Muratori (myrrh-uh-tore-ee) will provide an update on her efforts to improve addressing across the tri-county area. Muratori (myrrh-uh-tore-ee) is the 9-1-1 GIS Coordinator for the Big Bend area.
County officials are also set to receive department updates from the treasurer’s office, the emergency management department, and from Brewster County tourism.

Commissioners court is Tuesday, February 10 at 9:30 a.m. at the county courthouse.

This month, the Alpine Humane Society will hold a fundraiser to help bring a vet clinic to Terlingua.
The clinic will provide spaying, neutering, vaccinations and microchipping services for south county residents.
The fundraiser will be Sunday, February 22 from 6:00 to 9:00 p.m. at Venga. There will be food, music, a cash-bar, a pet costume contest and other activities.

Next week, a city-county taskforce will hold its final town hall on ground ambulance services in the region.
The taskforce has been meeting to figure out how to move forward with those services, since the contract with the current EMS provider isn’t being renewed once it ends in May.
The taskforce includes Alpine, Brewster County officials and community members.
The final town hall will be Monday, February 9 at the Sul Ross University Center at 6:00 p.m.
The county has also created a Q&A page with more information, which you can find at brewstercounty.gov.

Next week, the Brewster County clerk’s office will be closed. The office will be shut from Tuesday, February 10 to Friday, February 13 for continuing education.
Regular office hours at the clerk’s office will resume Tuesday, February 17.

This spring, Sul Ross State University will hold a career fair for students looking for part-time, full-time, and internship work.
The career fair will be held at the Morgan University Center – on the first and second floors – from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.
The event is free and open to anyone in the community, whether they would like to attend or host a table.

La senadora estatal de Texas, Joan Huffman, aspira a convertirse en la próxima fiscal general de Texas.
Huffman ha representado al condado de Harris desde 2008 y es una de las senadoras estatales con más años de servicio. En una entrevista con KVLF, Huffman afirmó que su experiencia como jueza de distrito penal y como fiscal durante muchos años la motivó a postularse para el cargo de máxima autoridad legal del estado.

El Parque Estatal Davis Mountains, el Indian Lodge y el restaurante Black Bear organizarán una feria de empleo este fin de semana.
Hay varias vacantes disponibles, incluyendo puestos de cocinero en el restaurante y personal de limpieza en el Indian Lodge.

Este mes, la Sociedad Protectora de Animales de Alpine organizará un evento para recaudar fondos y ayudar a establecer una clínica veterinaria en Terlingua.
La clínica ofrecerá servicios de esterilización, vacunación e implantación de microchips para los residentes del sur del condado.
El evento se llevará a cabo el domingo 22 de febrero de 6:00 p. m. a 9:00 p. m. en Venga. Habrá comida, música, barra de bebidas, un concurso de disfraces para mascotas y otras actividades.

La próxima semana, un grupo de trabajo conjunto de la ciudad y el condado celebrará su última reunión pública sobre los servicios de ambulancia terrestre en la región.
El grupo de trabajo se ha estado reuniendo para determinar cómo proceder con estos servicios, ya que el contrato con el proveedor actual de servicios de emergencia médica no se renovará al finalizar en mayo.
El grupo de trabajo está compuesto por funcionarios de Alpine, del condado de Brewster y miembros de la comunidad.
La última reunión pública se llevará a cabo el lunes 9 de febrero en el Centro Universitario Sul Ross a las 6:00 p. m.

La próxima semana, la oficina del secretario del condado de Brewster permanecerá cerrada. La oficina estará cerrada desde el martes 10 de febrero hasta el viernes 13 de febrero por capacitación continua.
