The annual Wildlife Weekend kicks off Friday in Alpine, and this year’s event will highlight the owls of the Davis Mountains.
All events are free and open to the public. And due to a chilly weather forecast for Saturday morning, the Wildlife Weekend activities and displays planned for the Alpine Farmers Market are now being held indoors at the Granada Theatre.
The third annual Wildlife Weekend takes place from Friday, Jan. 30 to Feb. 1.

Yesterday (WEDNESDAY), the city’s utilities department identified a water leak in the area near Holland Avenue and North Walker Street.
While crews work to replace a portion of the damaged water line, the city will need to reduce water pressure in the affected area. As a result, customers in surrounding areas may experience low water pressure or temporary loss of water service during the repair.

Next week, the national Read Aloud celebration returns to Sul Ross.
The annual event invites children from pre-k through 4th Grade and their families to celebrate the joy of reading.
Jeanne Qvarnstrom spoke to KVLF about the event. She said, part of the event will include a reading by award-winning author Donna Washington.
JEANNE1: “She is a storyteller and bookwriter, and every family who comes will get a free copy of one of her books, “Prak Fills The House,” and she will be there to autograph the book. And she has a wide experience in storytelling.” (0:19)
The Read Aloud celebration kicks off with a pizza dinner. And then kids will break out into different reading groups led by members of the community.
JEANNE2: “Also, after the books are read, for the children in each of those groups, there will be a drawing and they’ll get to take home one of those books, the lucky winner will take home the books that are read. And as I said, every family will walk away with a copy of Donna Washington’s book, because we hope that reading continues in the family.” (0:22)
This year’s celebration takes place Wednesday, Feb. 4, from 5:00 to 7:30 p.m. at the Morgan University Center.

Alpine officials meet on Tuesday, Feb. 3 for their next city council meeting.
According to an agenda for the meeting, the council will first hold a workshop meeting to discuss funding nonprofit organizations and the possible implementation of a community service grant program.
Council is also set to receive an annual report from the Alpine Police Department on profiling statistics – a yearly report required by Texas law.

Next week, Guitar in the Big Bend, a classical guitar concert series, will host a free concert, featuring musician Bokyung Byun
The event is Friday, Feb. 6 at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church in Marfa at 6 p.m.
She’ll also perform on Saturday, Feb. 7 at the Museum of the Big Bend in Alpine, beginning at 6 p.m.

Next month, the Granada Theater in Alpine will host “A Little Ray of Sunshine,” a night of music to fundraise for the Sunshine House.
Billy Mata and the Texas Tradition will perform a tribute to Ray Price, the Ole’ Cherokee Cowboy – and 100% of the proceeds will benefit Sunshine House’s meals on wheels program.
The fundraiser will be Thursday, Feb. 12 at 7 p.m. at the Granada Theater.
Tickets are $35, and a cash bar opens at 6 p.m.
Tickets sold only at the Sunshouse House, located at 402 E. Holland Ave.

Ayer (miércoles), el departamento de servicios públicos de la ciudad identificó una fuga de agua en el área cercana a la avenida Holland y la calle North Walker.
Mientras los equipos trabajan para reemplazar una parte de la tubería de agua dañada, la ciudad deberá reducir la presión del agua en la zona afectada. Como resultado, los clientes de las áreas circundantes pueden experimentar baja presión de agua o interrupciones temporales del servicio durante la reparación.

La próxima semana, la celebración nacional de la Lectura en Voz Alta regresa a Sul Ross.
