The annual Wildlife Weekend kicks off this Friday in Alpine. This year’s event will highlight the owls of the Davis Mountains.
Wildlife Weekend is a three-day celebration of the Chihuahuan Desert wildlife, and will feature guided walks, speakers, film screenings and activities.
All events are free and open to the public.
The third annual Wildlife Weekend takes place from Jan. 30 to Feb. 1.

In the next week, the group Tri-County Voter Promoters will host several voter registration events.
The nonpartisan group will be registering voters at the community center at the Davis Mountains Resort on Wednesday, Jan. 28 from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. Then on Thursday the group will be at the Morgan University Center at Sul Ross from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.
Other registration events will be at the Terlingua post office on Friday, Jan. 30 from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., and on Monday, Feb. 2 at the Marfa post office from noon to 3 p.m.
The last day to register to vote is February 2.

The group West of the Pecos Republican Women will hold a meet and greet for Republican candidates running for election.
Brandon Herrera, the Republican candidate running for Congressional District 23, will be in attendance. Herrera narrowly lost to incumbent Tony Gonzales in the 2024 Republican primary. Keith Barton will also be there; he’s also running for Congressional District 23.
Other candidates include County Judge Greg Henington and county commissioner Mo Morrow.
The meet and greet is next month at the Alpine Civic Center on February 10, from 6:00 to 9:00 p.m.

Next week, Guitar in the Big Bend, a classical guitar concert series, will host a free concert, featuring musician Bokyung Byun.
The event is Friday, Feb. 6 at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church in Marfa at 6 p.m.
She’ll also perform on Saturday, Feb. 7 at the Museum of the Big Bend in Alpine, beginning at 6 p.m.

Tickets for next month’s (FEBRUARY) Lonestar Cowboy Poetry Gathering are now available to the public.
The gathering starts February 19, and over the course of three days, the event will bring together poets, musicians and storytellers from all over to honor the history and culture of cowboying – performed by those who have lived it.

In February, the Granada Theater in Alpine will host “A Little Ray of Sunshine,” a night of music to fundraise for the Sunshine House.
Billy Mata and the Texas Tradition will perform a tribute to Ray Price, the Ole’ Cherokee Cowboy – and 100% of the proceeds will benefit Sunshine House’s meals on wheels program.
The fundraiser will be Thursday, Feb. 12 at 7 p.m. at the Granada Theater.
Tickets are $35, and a cash bar opens at 6 p.m.
Tickets sold only at the Sunshouse House, located at 402 E. Holland Ave.
