At last night’s (TUESDAY’S) city council meeting, officials were poised to approve a new ordinance regulating the use of golf carts and other so-called “pocket bikes” within the city, but ultimately tabled the vote.
The move came after input from a trooper with the Department of Public Safety.
Sergeant Jonathan Rutledge spoke to council about some of the potential hurdles they could face with how the ordinance is currently written.
RUTLEDGE1: “So if y’all pass this ordinance, I’ve found a couple of things in here, you are charging a registration. So you are, there is a section in the transportation code that says a political subdivision cannot require somebody to register a vehicle, the State of Texas already requires that. I would change that to require a permit of some kind.” (0:19)
Officials are now going to review the ordinance language and are planning to hold a workshop at a Feb. 17 meeting.
Also during the council meeting, emergency management coordinator James Etchison told officials that there has been a drop in fires and illegal burns in the city. Etchison says his department has been proactive, and becoming certified as a prescribed burn specialist has helped in keeping fire numbers low.
Council members also welcomed the new city manager, Henry Arredondo.

Tomorrow (THURSDAY), Blue Origin will launch its New Shepherd rocket for the first time this year.
On Thursday, Jan. 22, the space tourism company will lift off from its facility north of Van Horn, taking a crew of six to roughly 62 miles above Earth’s surface, the distance considered to be the boundary where Earth ends and space begins.
The flight takes off Thursday morning at 8:30.

Later this week, the group Tri-County Voter Promoters will host a voter registration event in Marfa.
The group will be registering voters at the post office on Friday, Jan. 23 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.
The last day to register to vote is February 2.

At the end of the month, the Jeff Davis County Library invites the public to a free presentation on the history of Hopi katsina (cat-see-nah) dolls.
Archeologist Tim Roberts, who recently retired from Texas Parks and Wildlife Department, will lead the talk.
The event is Jan. 31 from 11:00 a.m. to noon at the Jeff Davis County Library.

Guitar in the Big Bend, a classical guitar concert series, will host a free concert in February, featuring musician Bokyung Byun
The event is Friday, Feb. 6 at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church in Marfa at 6 p.m.
She’ll also perform on Saturday, Feb. 7 at the Museum of the Big Bend in Alpine, beginning at 6 p.m.

En la reunión del consejo municipal de anoche (martes), los funcionarios estaban a punto de aprobar una nueva ordenanza que regulaba el uso de carritos de golf y otras motocicletas pequeñas dentro de la ciudad, pero finalmente pospusieron la votación.
Esta decisión se tomó tras la intervención de un agente del Departamento de Seguridad Pública.
El sargento Jonathan Rutledge habló ante el consejo sobre algunos de los posibles obstáculos que podrían surgir con la redacción actual de la ordenanza.
cito: “Si aprueban esta ordenanza, he encontrado un par de puntos que me preocupan. Están exigiendo un registro. Hay una sección en el código de transporte que establece que una subdivisión política no puede exigir el registro de un vehículo, ya que el Estado de Texas ya lo exige. Yo lo modificaría para que se requiera algún tipo de permiso”.
Los funcionarios revisarán ahora el texto de la ordenanza y planean celebrar un taller en la reunión del 17 de febrero.
Durante la misma reunión del consejo, el coordinador de gestión de emergencias, James Etchison, informó a los funcionarios que ha habido una disminución en los incendios y las quemas ilegales en la ciudad. Etchison afirmó que su departamento ha actuado de forma proactiva y que la certificación como especialista en quemas controladas ha contribuido a mantener bajo el número de incendios.
Los miembros del consejo también dieron la bienvenida al nuevo administrador municipal, Henry Arredondo.

Mañana (jueves), Blue Origin lanzará su cohete New Shepard por primera vez este año.
El jueves 22 de enero, la compañía de turismo espacial despegará desde sus instalaciones al norte de Van Horn, llevando a una tripulación de seis personas a aproximadamente 100 kilómetros sobre la superficie terrestre, la distancia considerada como el límite donde termina la Tierra y comienza el espacio.
El vuelo despegará el jueves por la mañana a las 8:30.
