Michael Mog of Del Rio, Texas, passed away on January 8 in San Antonio, Texas surrounded by his loved ones. He was 70.
He was born September 4, 1955 to Donald D. Mog and Patricia A. Mog in Great Bend, Kansas.
Mike attended Sul Ross State University in Alpine, where he fell in love with the West Texas landscape.
While living there he met his wife Annette Ramos, with whom he shared 36 years of marriage. He worked in the car business for 40 years, where he built many meaningful relationships. Mike is remembered by his immediate and extended family as being a loyal and reliable family-man who always showed up for loved ones.
Mike is survived by his wife Annette Ramos; his daughter, his son-in-law, and a grandson.

This week, local officials will hold the first of three town halls on emergency services in Brewster County.
The town hall is being held by a city-county taskforce that’s looking to gather public feedback on ground ambulance services in the region. The taskforce has been meeting to figure out how to move forward with those services, since the contract with the current EMS provider ends in May.
The taskforce includes Alpine, Brewster County officials and community members.

The group Tri-County Voter Promoters will host several voter registration events across the Big Bend ahead of the March primary election.
The group’s first registration event this week is in Terlingua tomorrow (TUESDAY) from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Terlingua post office. Then, later in the week, the group will be registering voters in Marfa. On Friday, Jan. 23, the group will be at the Marfa post office from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.
The last day to register to vote is February 2.

This weekend, Far West Comic Con returns to Alpine. The annual celebration of pop-culture, anime and gaming will have a full schedule, from meet-and-greets with well-known voice actors and cosplay contests to gaming tournaments and live performances.
The Far West Comic Con takes place at the Alpine Civic Center on Saturday, Jan. 24 from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m.

At the end of the month, the Jeff Davis County Library invites the public to a free presentation on the history of Hopi katsina (cat-see-nah) dolls.
Archeologist Tim Roberts, who recently retired from Texas Parks and Wildlife Department, will lead the talk.
The event is Jan. 31 from 11:00 a.m. to noon at the Jeff Davis County Library.

Guitar in the Big Bend, a classical guitar concert series, will host a free concert in February, featuring musician Bokyung Byun
The event is Friday, Feb. 6 at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church in Marfa at 6 p.m.
She’ll also perform on Saturday, Feb. 7 at the Museum of the Big Bend in Alpine, beginning at 6 p.m.

In February, the Granada Theater in Alpine will host “A Little Ray of Sunshine,” a night of music to fundraise for the Sunshine House.
Billy Mata and the Texas Tradition will perform a tribute to Ray Price, the Ole’ Cherokee Cowboy – and 100% of the proceeds will benefit Sunshine House’s meals on wheels program.
The fundraiser will be Thursday, Feb. 12 at 7 p.m. at the Granada Theater.
Tickets are $35, and a cash bar opens at 6 p.m.
Tickets sold only at the Sunshouse House, located at 402 E. Holland Ave.

Esta semana, las autoridades locales celebrarán la primera de tres reuniones públicas sobre los servicios de emergencia en el condado de Brewster.
La reunión está organizada por un grupo de trabajo conjunto del municipio y el condado, cuyo objetivo es recabar la opinión pública sobre los servicios de ambulancia terrestre en la región. El grupo de trabajo se ha estado reuniendo para determinar cómo proceder con estos servicios, ya que el contrato con el actual proveedor de servicios médicos de emergencia finaliza en mayo.
