Barbara Watts Hord has passed away in Bastrop, Texas. She was 86.
Barbara grew up in Alpine and was raised on the old homestead ranch near Bluepoint mountain and Sunny Glen Canyon. She also worked at the Alpine Bank and ranched with Charles McDaniel. Her grandfather Clarence Hord Sr. was the Brewster County sheriff in the 1940s.
Barbara will rest in Bastrop County, Texas.
She is survived by her son Joseph Watts, Christina Williams, and Michael Watts, and grandson Ronald Roberts, who was by her bedside during her passing.
Barbara’s family would like to ask for thoughts during this time.

The Museum of the Big Bend at Sul Ross has a new director.
Dr. Emily Wilkinson started in the new role this month. In an interview with KVLF, the Lubbock native said she was drawn to the institution for the work it’s doing and the programming it offers.
WILKINSON1: “It’s a small museum and it’s got so many amazing, kind of big museum things going for it. And I think that speaks a lot to the museum, and the staff that the museum has, and the things that they’re able to accomplish despite the size, or what some people might think are geographic limitations. I think it’s really all kind of come together into just some really, really great things happening for the museum.” (0:26)
Previously, Wilkinson––who holds a master’s degree in museum science, and a Ph.D. in higher education research––worked at the Ranching Heritage Center in Lubbock, and also served as the public art director for the Texas Tech system.
WILKINSON2: “So I’ve always had, kind of, a love for history and also the arts, and the museum really seems to take both of those things. There’s such an amazing art scene here, and an art space in the museum, and it’s really nice to see both being used at this institution.” (0:20)
Looking forward, Wilkinson says she’s wanting to focus more on educational programming at the museum, classes for children, ways to involve Sul Ross Students, and programming for adults too. She says, it’s all about finding new ways to bring people – locals and visitors alike – into the museum.
Wilkinson says the museum’s also looking to hear from potential collaborators, from area museums, organizations and businesses.

This weekend, Davis Mountains State Park invites the public to attend “The Bewildering Barbary Sheep,” an educational event to learn about the big sheep often seen grazing the mountains of the Big Bend.
The event is Saturday, Jan. 17 from 2 to 3 p.m. at the park’s interpretive center.

Next week, Big Bend Radio hosts a blood drive at their studios in Alpine.
Blood donations dropped over the winter holidays and there’s an urgent need for donations.
Head to the Big Bend Radio studios on Monday, January 19 to help patients in need by donating blood. The bloodmobile starts at 9:00 a.m. and continues until 1:00 p.m. And if you donate blood between January 5 and February 8, you could win one of 26 $500 gift cards.

Next week, Alpine officials will meet for their next city council meeting.
During the meeting officials will hold the swearing-in ceremonies for two new city officials: city manager Henry Arredondo and chief of police Kirk Caughman. As part of the meeting, city council members will also review and potentially approve the final reading of a new ordinance that regulates the use of golf carts and other so-called “pocket bikes” within the city.
The city council meets Tuesday, Jan. 20 at 5:30 p.m.
Before the council’s meeting there will be a workshop to discuss funding nonprofit organizations and implementing a community service grant program.
That discussion begins at 4 p.m. at the council chambers, located at 803 W. Holland Avenue.

Guitar in the Big Bend, a classical guitar concert series, will host a free concert in February, featuring musician Bokyung Byun (bawk-yawng bee-yewn).
The event is Friday, Feb. 6 at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church in Marfa at 6 p.m.
She’ll also perform on Saturday, Feb. 7 at the Museum of the Big Bend in Alpine, beginning at 6 p.m.

In February, the Granada Theater in Alpine will host “A Little Ray of Sunshine,” a night of music to fundraise for the Sunshine House.
Billy Mata and the Texas Tradition will perform a tribute to Ray Price, the Ole’ Cherokee Cowboy – and 100% of the proceeds will benefit Sunshine House’s meals on wheels program.
The fundraiser will be Thursday, Feb. 12 at 7 p.m. at the Granada Theater.
Tickets are $35, and a cash bar opens at 6 p.m.
Tickets sold only at the Sunshouse House, located at 402 E. Holland Ave.

El Museo de Big Bend en Sul Ross tiene una nueva directora.

La próxima semana, los funcionarios de Alpine se reunirán para su próxima sesión del consejo municipal.
Durante la reunión, se llevará a cabo la ceremonia de juramento de dos nuevos funcionarios municipales: el administrador municipal Henry Arredondo y el jefe de policía Kirk Caughman.
