John Allen McFadin of Alpine has passed away.
John graduated from Iraan High School in 1964 where he played football all four years. In 1970 he graduated from Sul Ross with a bachelor’s degree. After graduation, he went on to teach and coach in Comstock, Sanderson, Brady, and Bryson. After retiring from teaching, he was a ranch manager at Tierra Linda Ranch at Kerrville for eight years.
After his wife Mary passed away and was buried in Alpine, John moved there to be near her. John became a member of the First Baptist Church of Alpine.
His family wants to thank his physician, his therapist, and his friends in Alpine, Texas.
John is survived by his two sons, six grandchildren and two sisters and several nieces and nephews.
A visitation will take place Friday at Alpine Memorial Funeral Home, located at 209 W. Sul Ross Avenue, beginning at 1:00 p.m.
The following day, Saturday, January 17, a graveside service will be held at Elm Grove Cemetery in Alpine beginning at 2:00 p.m.

This fall, Sul Ross State University will offer a new master’s degree in finance.
According to school, the program is designed to prepare students with the knowledge and skills needed to excel in finance. In a press release announcing the degree, Dr. Sumantra Sengupta (sen-GOOp-tah) said the graduate program is responding to Governor Abott’s “call to support Texas’s emergence as a national and global financial hub through targeted, workforce-ready education.”

This year’s Wildlife Weekend in Alpine will highlight the owls of the Davis Mountains.
Chris Ruggia is the director of tourism for the city of Alpine.
RUGGIA1: “The core of Wildlife Weekend is kind of the combination of, one, celebrating the wildlife, two, the science that’s happening now around wildlife, and then third, the art that is interpreting that science.” (0:17)
Ruggia says the three-day event will feature guided walks, speakers and film screenings and activities for kids too.
RUGGIA2: “I would really encourage everyone to go to the webpage, which is visitalpinetx.com/wildlife, and really look at that menu of stuff. Because very few people will want to do everything on there, but there’s going to be something, I think, for almost everybody.” (0:19)
All Wildlife Weekend events are free and open to the public.
The third annual Wildlife Weekend will take place from Jan. 30 to Feb. 1.

Next week, the local nonprofit Alpine Community Projects will host a community conversation on elder care in the region and how to provide for the Big Bend’s aging population.
The meeting is Thursday, Jan. 22 at 5:30 p.m. at the old schoolhouse.

John Allen McFadin, de Alpine, ha fallecido.
John se graduó de la Escuela Preparatoria Iraan en 1964, donde jugó fútbol americano durante los cuatro años. En 1970 se graduó de la Universidad Sul Ross con una licenciatura. Después de graduarse, se dedicó a la enseñanza y al entrenamiento deportivo en Comstock, Sanderson, Brady y Bryson. Tras jubilarse de la docencia, fue administrador del rancho Tierra Linda en Kerrville durante ocho años.
Después del fallecimiento de su esposa Mary, quien fue sepultada en Alpine, John se mudó allí para estar cerca de ella. John se convirtió en miembro de la Primera Iglesia Bautista de Alpine.
Su familia desea agradecer a su médico, a su terapeuta y a sus amigos en Alpine, Texas.
A John le sobreviven sus dos hijos, seis nietos, dos hermanas y varios sobrinos y sobrinas.
El velorio se llevará a cabo el viernes en la Funeraria Alpine Memorial, ubicada en 209 W. Sul Ross Avenue, a partir de la 1:00 p.m.
Al día siguiente, sábado 17 de enero, se realizará un servicio fúnebre en el cementerio Elm Grove en Alpine, a partir de las 2:00 p.m.

Este otoño, la Universidad Estatal de Sul Ross ofrecerá una nueva maestría en finanzas.
Según la universidad, el programa está diseñado para brindar a los estudiantes los conocimientos y las habilidades necesarias para sobresalir en el campo de las finanzas. En un comunicado de prensa que anunciaba la nueva titulación, el Dr. Sumantra Sengupta afirmó que el programa de posgrado responde al llamado del gobernador Abbott para “apoyar el surgimiento de Texas como un centro financiero nacional y global a través de una educación especializada y orientada a la inserción laboral”.

El Fin de Semana de la Vida Silvestre de este año en Alpine destacará a los búhos de las montañas Davis.
Chris Ruggia es el director de turismo de la ciudad de Alpine.

Ruggia comenta que el evento de tres días incluirá caminatas guiadas, charlas, proyecciones de películas y actividades para niños.
