Brewster County officials are preparing for upcoming town halls on emergency services in the region.
The contract for the current EMS provider is expiring in May, and a local taskforce has been meeting to figure out how to move forward with those services.
At today’s (TUESDAY’S) commissioner’s court meeting, County Judge Greg Henington said he feels optimistic about the work the taskforce is doing.
HENINGTON1: “And I’ve asked the taskforce to do three things: One, what do we want our EMS to look like? Two, what is it going to cost us? And three, what’s the original structure that we want?” (0:10)
Henginton believes the group could have a recommendation by early March. He says he hopes people attend the upcoming town halls and share ideas about how to move forward and what they’d like to see in emergency services.
And while the county’s contract with the current provider Emergent Air expires in May, Henington says the company is flexible.
HENINGTON2: “They’ve been very supportive. They’re not just going to run off and abandon the northern part of the county. So I think we’re going to be okay.” (0:02)
The first town hall is January 21 at the Alpine Civic Center.

Alpine resident Bruce Richardson is one of a handful of candidates running in the Democratic primary for Congressional District 23.
Richardson is a first time candidate and said he was inspired to run partly because he felt much of the “situation in Washington” came down to politicians not doing their job.
RICHARDSON1: “And I hope I can be a better representative than the folks who seem more interested in performance than policy.” (0:07)
Richardson said, if elected, he would focus on supporting rural communities in the district. Speaking to KVLF, he said one of his goals is to increase funding for education, particularly pre-school, headstart and afterschool programs.
Richardson will be part of a Congressional District 23 candidate forum taking place this weekend at Sul Ross.
The event is Saturday, Jan. 17 at 2 p.m.

Tomorrow (WEDNESDAY), McDonald Observatory will host a live deep-sky tour of the constellation Orion. During the event, astronomers will talk about Orion’s cultural significance and its importance in astronomy.
During the event , on Wednesday, Jan. 14, moderators will also answer audience questions. And if weather permits, the observatory will show live views of Orion.
The Observatory will stream the event online – on Youtube, Facebook and Instagram. The virtual stargazing starts at 7:30 p.m.

This weekend, Davis Mountains State Park invites the public to attend “The Bewildering Barbary Sheep,” an educational event to learn about the big sheep often seen grazing the mountains of the Big Bends.
The event is Saturday, Jan. 17 from 2 to 3 p.m. at the park’s interpretive center.

Los funcionarios del condado de Brewster se están preparando para las próximas reuniones comunitarias sobre los servicios de emergencia en la región.
El contrato con el actual proveedor de servicios médicos de emergencia vence en mayo, y un grupo de trabajo local se ha estado reuniendo para determinar cómo proceder con dichos servicios.
