Margarita Vega, a beloved mother, friend, and cherished member of the Marfa community, passed away on December 31. She was 46.
Born in Marfa, Margarita was a spirited woman who embodied kindness and fierce determination in all aspects of her life.
She was known as Marfa’s favorite cashier – her warm smile and engaging personality left a lasting impression on everyone who met her. But she wasn’t just a face behind the counter, she was a source of joy and a testament to the small-town spirit that makes Marfa so special. Those who encountered her found a caring soul, someone who would give you the clothes off her back if you needed them, proving time and again that her heart was as vast as her love for her community.
A proud mother, Margarita’s greatest accomplishments were her seven children. She instilled in them the values of kindness, mindfulness, and resilience. Her unwavering spirit encouraged them to embrace life’s challenges with grace and determination. Margarita taught her children the importance of enjoying each day as it came, making lifelong memories filled with laughter and love.
A visitation was held at Alpine Memorial Funeral Home earlier today (FRIDAY).
Margarita will be remembered for her unwavering love, vibrant personality, and the inspiring legacy she leaves behind through her children and all those whose lives she touched.

Tonight (Friday), Marfa and Balmorhea ISDs are hosting a fundraiser to help the family of a Fort Davis child that passed away earlier this month.
According to Marfa ISD, donations will go toward supporting funeral expenses for Gabriel Talvarez Modesto, a beloved student at Fort Davis ISD.
Donations will be accepted during the varsity basketball games at the Marfa shorthorn gym tonight at 6 and 7:30.
Funeral services for Gabriel will be held at Saint Joseph Catholic Church in Fort Davis tomorrow (SATURDAY) at 1 p.m.

State officials have confirmed another case of New World Screwworm. It’s the second confirmed case of the flesh-eating parasite in as many weeks.
According to Texas Agriculture Commissioner Sid Miller, the infected cattle was discovered in the Mexican State of Tamaulipas–roughly 200 miles from the Texas border. This is the third active case of New World Screwworm in Tamaulipas.
In a statement, Miller urged cattle producers to monitor their livestock and to report anything that seems suspicious or unusual. Miller said producers must QUOTE “stay informed, stay vigilant, and prepare immediately.”
The New World Screwworm is a parasitic fly that embeds its larvae into the living flesh of warm-blooded animals. Decades ago it upended the state’s cattle industry.
Its flesh-eating parasite had been eradicated from the U.S., but in the last year has been detected multiple times in Mexico and Central America.

Next week, the Texas Historical Commission will host a workshop on creating “heritage experiences” that connect people to a place.
The workshop is part of the commission’s Main Street program that aims to help small towns with revitalizing their historic centers.
The all-day workshop is Tuesday, Jan. 13 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Museum of the Big Bend.
The workshop will go over new ideas for engaging both locals and visitors and how to create community events.
The event is free to attend, but registration is required.

Guitar in the Big Bend, a classical guitar concert series, will host a free concert in February, featuring musician Bokyung Byun
The event is Friday, Feb. 6 at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church in Marfa at 6 p.m.
She’ll also perform on Saturday, Feb. 7 at the Museum of the Big Bend in Alpine, beginning at 6 p.m.

Margarita Vega, una querida madre, amiga y apreciada miembro de la comunidad de Marfa, falleció el 31 de diciembre. Tenía 46 años.
Nacida en Marfa, Margarita era una mujer enérgica que encarnaba la bondad y una determinación inquebrantable en todos los aspectos de su vida.
Era conocida como la cajera favorita de Marfa; su cálida sonrisa y su personalidad encantadora dejaron una huella imborrable en todos los que la conocieron. Pero no era solo una cara detrás del mostrador, era una fuente de alegría y un ejemplo del espíritu de pueblo pequeño que hace que Marfa sea tan especial. Quienes la conocieron encontraron en ella un alma bondadosa, alguien que les daría hasta lo que no tenía si lo necesitaban, demostrando una y otra vez que su corazón era tan grande como su amor por su comunidad.
Madre orgullosa, el mayor logro de Margarita fueron sus siete hijos. Les inculcó los valores de la bondad, la empatía y la resiliencia. Su espíritu inquebrantable los animó a afrontar los desafíos de la vida con gracia y determinación. Margarita les enseñó a sus hijos la importancia de disfrutar cada día, creando recuerdos imborrables llenos de risas y amor.
Se llevó a cabo una velación en Alpine Memorial Funeral Home hoy temprano (VIERNES).
Margarita será recordada por su amor inquebrantable, su personalidad vibrante y el legado inspirador que deja a través de sus hijos y de todos aquellos cuyas vidas tocó.

Esta noche (viernes), los distritos escolares de Marfa y Balmorhea organizarán una colecta de fondos para ayudar a la familia de un niño de Fort Davis que falleció a principios de este mes.
Según el distrito escolar de Marfa, las donaciones se destinarán a cubrir los gastos funerarios de Gabriel Talvarez Modesto, un querido estudiante del distrito escolar de Fort Davis.
Se aceptarán donaciones durante los partidos de baloncesto de la categoría juvenil que se celebrarán esta noche a las 6:00 y 7:30 en el gimnasio de Marfa.
Los servicios funerarios de Gabriel se llevarán a cabo en la Iglesia Católica San José en Fort Davis mañana (SÁBADO) a la 1 p.m.

Las autoridades estatales han confirmado otro caso de gusano barrenador del Nuevo Mundo. Es el segundo caso confirmado de este parásito carnívoro en apenas dos semanas.
Según el Comisionado de Agricultura de Texas, Sid Miller, el ganado infectado se descubrió en el estado mexicano de Tamaulipas, a unos 320 kilómetros de la frontera con Texas. Este es el tercer caso activo de gusano barrenador del Nuevo Mundo en Tamaulipas.
En un comunicado, Miller instó a los ganaderos a monitorear su ganado y reportar cualquier aspecto sospechoso o inusual. Miller dijo que los productores deben, “mantenerse informados, vigilantes y preparados de inmediato”.
El gusano barrenador del Nuevo Mundo es una mosca parásita que incrusta sus larvas en la carne viva de animales de sangre caliente. Hace décadas, revolucionó la industria ganadera del estado.
Su parásito carnívoro había sido erradicado de Estados Unidos, pero en el último año ha sido detectado varias veces en México y Centroamérica.

La próxima semana, la Comisión Histórica de Texas organizará un taller sobre cómo crear “experiencias patrimoniales” que conecten a las personas con un lugar.
El taller forma parte del programa Main Street de la comisión, cuyo objetivo es ayudar a las pequeñas ciudades a revitalizar sus centros históricos.
El taller, de un día de duración, se llevará a cabo el martes 13 de enero, de 9:00 a 3:00, en el Museo de Big Bend.
En el taller se presentarán nuevas ideas para involucrar tanto a los residentes como a los visitantes y se abordará cómo crear eventos comunitarios.
La asistencia es gratuita, pero se requiere inscripción previa.
