Victoria Molinar Holguin of Alpine has passed away. She was 91.
Her life’s work was her family, finding her greatest fulfillment in her children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren. She dedicated her life to creating a warm and safe home for those she comforted and helped.
She was an incredibly strong woman, while small in stature, who raised and provided what she could to five children through her hard-working hands as a housekeeper, babysitter, cook, and reputable seamstress.
She was a master of needle works and crafty creations. She could make something beautiful out of almost anything. Later in life she ran her little pop-up craft store out of her home, long before pop-ups became a thing, mostly gifting her treasured creations.
Victoria is survived by her two sisters, her three daughters, her 11 grandchildren, 21 great grandchildren and three great-great grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews.
She will be missed and remembered fondly by all whose hearts she touched.
A funeral mass for Victoria will be at Our Lady of Peace Catholic Church on Tuesday, Dec. 30 at 10:00 a.m. with the burial to follow at Holy Angels Cemetery.

In January, the local nonprofit Alpine Community Projects will host a community conversation on elder care in the region and how to provide for the Big Bend’s aging population.
The meeting is Thursday, Jan. 22 at 5:30 p.m. at the old schoolhouse.

The Big Bend Arts Council is looking for submissions for its next show, “Way out West-Wildlife.”
The show will run from Jan. 8 to Feb. 24, and the group is looking for work centered on a theme of wildlife to coincide with Wildlife Weekend in Alpine.
The deadline to get your work to the gallery is Jan. 6 at 4:30 p.m.

Next week, the Small Business Development Center at Sul Ross State University will host a training opportunity for business owners looking to learn the craft of making content.
In this two-hour webinar, you’ll learn how to create videos that reflect your brand, resonate with your audience, and support your goals. The webinar’s presenter, Stephanie Scheller (shell-ER) will show you how to clear up your message, plan for engaging content and how to create structure and creativity in your videos.
The virtual training will be Thursday, Jan. 8 from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m.

The 35th Annual Black Pea cookoff takes place in Terlingua on New Year’s day. To join the competition, all you have to do is make some “Good Luck Peas” and take them to Terlingua ghost town. There will be live music, a raffle and prizes for the best dish.
All proceeds from the event benefit local high school graduates.

On New Year’s Day, Balmorhea State Park invites the public to head to the pool to get 2026 started with a plunge into the park’s cool spring-fed waters.
On Thursday, Jan. 1 at 11 a.m., the park will bring the swimmers together to count down with them and leap into the pool.
The event is free with paid entry into the park.

Victoria Molinar Holguín, de Alpine, falleció a los 91 años.
El trabajo de su vida fue su familia, encontrando su mayor satisfacción en sus hijos, nietos y bisnietos. Dedicó su vida a crear un hogar cálido y seguro para quienes brindaba consuelo y ayuda.
Era una mujer increíblemente fuerte, a pesar de su baja estatura, que crió y proveyó lo que pudo a sus cinco hijos con el esfuerzo de sus propias manos, trabajando como ama de llaves, niñera, cocinera y costurera de gran reputación.
Era una maestra de la costura y las manualidades. Podía crear algo hermoso con casi cualquier cosa. Más adelante, en su vida, regentó una pequeña tienda de artesanías en su casa, mucho antes de que este tipo de negocios se popularizaran, regalando la mayoría de sus preciadas creaciones.
A Victoria le sobreviven sus dos hermanas, sus tres hijas, sus 11 nietos, 21 bisnietos y tres tataranietos, además de numerosos sobrinos y sobrinas.
Será extrañada y recordada con cariño por todos aquellos a quienes tocó con su bondad.
La misa fúnebre por Victoria se celebrará en la Iglesia Católica Nuestra Señora de la Paz el martes 30 de diciembre a las 10:00 a. m., seguida del entierro en el Cementerio Holy Angels.

En enero, la organización local sin fines de lucro Alpine Community Projects organizará una conversación comunitaria sobre el cuidado de los ancianos en la región y cómo ayudar a la población envejeciente de Big Bend.

El Consejo de Artes de Big Bend busca obras para su próxima exposición, “Way out West – Vida Silvestre”.
La exposición se llevará a cabo del 8 de enero al 24 de febrero, y el grupo busca obras con la temática de la vida silvestre, coincidiendo con el Fin de Semana de la Vida Silvestre en Alpine.

El 35º Concurso Anual de Guiso de Frijoles Negros se celebra en Terlingua el Día de Año Nuevo. Para participar, solo tienes que preparar un guiso de frijoles negros para la buena suerte y llevarlo al pueblo fantasma de Terlingua. Habrá música en vivo, una rifa y premios para el mejor plato.
Todas las ganancias del evento se destinarán a los graduados de la escuela preparatoria local.

El Día de Año Nuevo, el Parque Estatal Balmorhea invita al público a la piscina para comenzar el 2026 con un chapuzón en las refrescantes aguas de manantial del parque.
