Maria Granado, a beloved wife, daughter, mother, and cherished friend, has died. She was 94.
Maria’s life was a tapestry woven with her love for family, dedication to education, and her diverse interests that brought joy to those around her.
Her career at Sul Ross State University in Alpine exemplified her commitment to the community. Maria was not only dedicated to her work but also to nurturing the minds of the younger generations. She took immense pride in teaching her grandchildren and neighborhood children Spanish, sharing with them the beauty and richness of her language and culture.
Above all, Maria was known for her friendly and caring personality. She loved visiting and engaging in heartfelt conversations, leaving a lasting impression on everyone she met. Her warmth and kindness extended to her pets, who were also a source of joy throughout her life, and she had a special affinity for tending to her flowers, creating a vibrant and welcoming home.
Maria leaves behind a loving family who will forever cherish her memory. She is survived by her four children and seven grandchildren.
In honor of Maria’s life, visitation will be held at Our Lady of Peace Catholic Church in Alpine on Dec. 26 from 9:00 until 11:30 a.m., followed by the recitation of the rosary, culminating with a mass starting at noon.
The interment will take place at Holy Angels Cemetery, where she will be laid to rest, surrounded by those who love her.
As we remember Maria’s legacy, we celebrate her kindness, her devotion to her family, and her unwavering belief in the power of love and education.

The City of Alpine will hold its next monthly bulk pick up during the first full week of the new year.
You can get rid of large items like furniture, mattresses, appliances and yard waste – but must first schedule a pickup. Each household is limited to 5 items or 3 cubic yards worth items to be picked up.
Residents will have from Monday, Dec. 29 to Friday, Jan. 2 to schedule their pickup for the following week.

The final show of the season is Saturday, Dec. 20 at the Cinnabar Theater.

Next week, the Sunshine House in Alpine will hold a free health clinic.
On Monday, Dec. 22, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., the clinic will offer general checkups and consultations, EKG screenings, and ultrasound screenings.
The Sunshinehouse is located at 402 E. Holland Ave.

Next week, birders across the Big Bend are invited to take part in the 126th annual National Audubon Society Christmas Bird Count.
There will be several bird counts. The first one will be in Marfa on Sunday, Dec. 21 at Sunset Park in Marfa at 7:30 a.m. The next one will be at Big Bend Ranch, where guides will take you on several hiking paths and rugged routes – all in effort of counting the region’s birds.
That bird county takes place Tuesday, Dec. 23 at 6 a.m. Participants will first meet at Fort Leaton State Historical Site before heading out.

Holy Angels Cemetery Association is hosting a New Years celebration.
There will be a dinner, a dance and live entertainment fundraiser on Dec. 31 at the Granada Theatre in Alpine.
The dinner will start at 7 p.m. The music for the night will be provided by the Pecos River Band and DJ Pancho. There will also be door prizes, a photobooth, and party favors.
Tickets for the event are $50 per person.

Proceeds from the event will support the Holy Angels Cemetery Association, a local nonprofit maintaining one of Alpine’s most historic community spaces.

In January, the Big Bend Live Stock Association will host its 82nd annual stock show.
The show begins Friday, Jan. 9 at the Alpine ISD ag barn – beginning with the goat show at 9 a.m. And then at 5:30 on Friday, the horse show kicks off at the Sul Ross SALE Arena.
The stock show will continue on Saturday, Jan. 10 with a steer show, an awards show and auction. There will be food each day for sale.

María Granado, querida esposa, hija, madre y querida amiga, falleció a los 94 años.
La vida de María fue un tapiz tejido con su amor por la familia, su dedicación a la educación y sus diversos intereses que brindaron alegría a quienes la rodeaban.
Su trayectoria profesional en la Universidad Estatal Sul Ross en Alpine ejemplificó su compromiso con la comunidad. María no solo se dedicó a su trabajo, sino también a cultivar las mentes de las generaciones más jóvenes. Sentía un inmenso orgullo al enseñar español a sus nietos y a los niños del vecindario, compartiendo con ellos la belleza y la riqueza de su idioma y cultura.
Sobre todo, María era conocida por su personalidad amable y cariñosa. Le encantaba visitar a sus seres queridos y entablar conversaciones sinceras, dejando una huella imborrable en todos los que la conocieron. Su calidez y bondad se extendían a sus mascotas, que también fueron una fuente de alegría a lo largo de su vida, y sentía una especial predilección por cuidar sus flores, creando un hogar vibrante y acogedor.
María deja atrás una familia que la amaba y que siempre atesorará su recuerdo. Le sobreviven sus cuatro hijos y siete nietos.
En honor a la vida de María, el velorio se llevará a cabo en la Iglesia Católica Nuestra Señora de la Paz en Alpine el 26 de diciembre, de 9:00 a 11:30 a.m., seguido del rezo del rosario, que culminará con una misa a las 12:00 del mediodía.
El sepelio tendrá lugar en el Cementerio Holy Angels, donde descansará en paz, rodeada de sus seres queridos.
Al recordar el legado de María, celebramos su bondad, su devoción a su familia y su inquebrantable fe en el poder del amor y la educación.

La ciudad de Alpine llevará a cabo su próxima recolección mensual de residuos masivos durante la primera semana completa del nuevo año.
Puede deshacerse de artículos grandes como muebles, colchones, electrodomésticos y residuos de jardín, pero primero debe programar la recolección. Cada hogar tiene un límite de 5 artículos o 3 yardas cúbicas de artículos para la recolección.
Los residentes tendrán desde el lunes 29 de diciembre hasta el viernes 2 de enero para programar la recolección para la semana siguiente.

La próxima semana, los observadores de aves de Big Bend están invitados a participar en el centesimo vigesimo sexto 126º Conteo Navideño Anual de Aves de la Sociedad Nacional Audubon.
Se realizarán varios censos de aves. El primero tendrá lugar en Marfa el domingo 21 de diciembre en Sunset Park a las 7:30 a.m. El siguiente será en Big Bend Ranch, donde guías especializados los acompañarán por diversos senderos y rutas de difícil acceso, con el objetivo de censar las aves de la región.
Este censo se llevará a cabo el martes 23 de diciembre a las 6:00 a.m. Los participantes se reunirán primero en el Sitio Histórico Estatal Fort Leaton antes de comenzar la actividad.

La Asociación del Cementerio de los Santos Ángeles está organizando una celebración de Año Nuevo.
El 31 de diciembre se llevará a cabo una cena, baile y evento benéfico con música en vivo en el Teatro Granada en Alpine.
La cena comenzará a las 7 p.m. La música estará a cargo de la banda Pecos River Band y DJ Pancho. También habrá sorteos, una cabina de fotos y obsequios para los asistentes.
Las entradas para el evento tienen un precio de $50 por persona.

En enero, la Big Bend Live Stock Association organizará su 82ª exposición ganadera anual.
El evento comienza el viernes 9 de enero en el pabellón agrícola del Distrito Escolar Independiente de Alpine, con la exhibición de cabras a las 9:00 a. m. Posteriormente, a las 5:30 p. m. del mismo viernes, dará inicio la exhibición de caballos en la Arena SALE de Sul Ross.
La feria ganadera continuará el sábado 10 de enero con una exhibición de novillos, una ceremonia de premiación y una subasta. Habrá venta de comida todos los días.
