State officials have confirmed another case of New World Screwworm. The flesh-eating parasite was detected in a bovine in Northern Mexico nearly 120 miles from the Texas border.
As Carlos Morales reports, this is the northernmost active case currently in Mexico.
According to the Texas Department of Agriculture, the case was detected in the Mexican state of Nuevo Leon, which borders the U.S.
The New World Screwworm is a parasitic fly that embeds its larvae into the living flesh of warm-blooded animals. The fly has wreaked havoc on the state’s cattle industry in the past.
In a statement, agriculture commissioner Sid Miller called the screwworm QUOTE “one of the most devastating livestock pests.” He urged Texas cattle ranches to remain vigilant and to monitor their livestock.
The U.S. has responded to the threat of the parasite – in part – by closing the country’s ports to cattle and other livestock imported from Mexico.

This weekend, head to the Alpine Public Library for the grand opening of the Patty Manning pollinator garden.
The newly built space includes a walking path that takes visitors through the garden, which features cacti, native trees, grasses, and shrubs and a butterfly garden too.
Patty Manning was a long-time grower of native plants in the Big Bend. She was a field botanist, a member of the Native Plant Society of Texas, and a co-founder of Twin Sisters Natives in Alpine.
A ribbon cutting ceremony takes place at 2p.m. and will be followed by a reception at the Ritchey at 4 p.m.

This weekend, the Chinati Foundation and Sul Ross State University present “Seeing Light,” a live reading featuring the work of Sul Ross students.
The event takes place Sunday, Dec. 7 from 5 to 7 p.m. at the Locker Plant in Marfa.
The reading is free and open to the public. The Locker Planet is located at 115 E. Oak Street.

The local nonprofit Friends of Big Bend Ranch State Park is holding a raffle for a chance to get an early look at the new Chinati Mountains State Natural Area.
The new state park stretches across roughly 39,000 acres of Big Bend country, but doesn’t officially open until 2032.
The nonprofit is welcoming a select group of raffle winners to hike the park on the first day of the new year.
They’re selling raffle tickets now until Dec. 13. Then starting on Dec. 14, Big Bend Ranch State Park employees will be drawing one winner per day, ending on Christmas Day.
Each person drawn will be allowed to bring one guest.

Next week, officials with the city of Alpine and Brewster County will hold a joint workshop, where they’re set to discuss the future of emergency medical services in the region.
According to an agenda for the meeting, officials will consider – among other things – the current coordination on emergency services, overall needs and how the city and county can better work together.
County officials have decided not to renew the contract with the current EMS provider – that ends in May 2026.
The city-county workshop is Tuesday, Dec. 9, beginning at 9:30 a.m. at the county courthouse.

Las autoridades estatales confirmaron otro caso de gusano barrenador del Nuevo Mundo. Este parásito carnívoro se detectó en un bovino del norte de México, a casi 190 kilómetros de la frontera con Texas.
Según el Departamento de Agricultura de Texas, el caso fue detectado en el estado mexicano de Nuevo León, fronterizo con Estados Unidos.
El gusano barrenador del Nuevo Mundo es una mosca parásita que incrusta sus larvas en la carne viva de animales de sangre caliente. Esta mosca ha causado estragos en la industria ganadera del estado en el pasado.
En un comunicado, el comisionado de agricultura Sid Miller calificó al gusano barrenador como CITA “una de las plagas más devastadoras del ganado”. Instó a los ranchos ganaderos de Texas a permanecer vigilantes y monitorear su ganado.
Estados Unidos ha respondido a la amenaza del parásito, en parte, cerrando los puertos del país al ganado y otros animales importados de México.

El espacio de nueva construcción incluye un sendero que lleva a los visitantes a través del jardín, que cuenta con cactus, árboles nativos, pastos y arbustos y también un jardín de mariposas.
Patty Manning cultivó plantas nativas en Big Bend durante mucho tiempo. Fue botánica de campo, miembro de la Sociedad de Plantas Nativas de Texas y cofundadora de Twin Sisters Natives en Alpine.
La ceremonia de inauguración se llevará a cabo a las 2 p. m. y será seguida por una recepción en el Ritchey a las 4 p. m.

La organización local sin fines de lucro Amigos del Parque Estatal Big Bend Ranch está realizando un sorteo para tener la oportunidad de conocer por adelantado la nueva Área Natural Estatal de las Montañas Chinati.
El nuevo parque estatal se extiende por aproximadamente 16,000 hectáreas de la región de Big Bend, pero no abrirá oficialmente hasta 2032.
La organización invita a un grupo selecto de ganadores del sorteo a recorrer el parque el primer día del año nuevo.
Se están vendiendo boletos para el sorteo hasta el 13 de diciembre. A partir del 14 de diciembre, los empleados del Parque Estatal Big Bend Ranch sortearán un ganador por día, hasta el día de Navidad.
Cada persona sorteada podrá llevar un acompañante.

La próxima semana, funcionarios de la ciudad de Alpine y del condado de Brewster realizarán un taller conjunto, donde discutirán el futuro de los servicios médicos de emergencia en la región.
Según la agenda de la reunión, los funcionarios considerarán, entre otras cosas, la coordinación actual de los servicios de emergencia, las necesidades generales y cómo la ciudad y el condado pueden trabajar mejor juntos.
Los funcionarios del condado han decidido no renovar el contrato con el actual proveedor de EMS, que finaliza en mayo de 2026.
El taller de la ciudad y el condado será el martes 9 de diciembre, a partir de las 9:30 a. m. en el palacio de justicia del condado.
