This weekend, head to the Alpine Public Library for the grand opening of the Patty Manning pollinator garden.
The newly built space includes a walking path that takes visitors through the garden, which features cacti, native trees, grasses, and shrubs and a butterfly garden too.
Jim Martinez spoke to KVLF about the garden.
MARTINEZ1: “We probably have about 300 different species out there. And there’s a few things we still have to add because they just weren’t available to purchase or seed wasn’t available . Martin: And cactus and succulent? “There’s probably maybe 75 to 100 different cactuses out there.” (0:20)
Patty Manning was a long-time grower of native plants in the Big Bend. She was a field botanist, a member of the Native Plant Society of Texas, and a co-founder of Twin Sisters Natives in Alpine.
Price Rumbelow, who helped with the project along with Martinez, said nearly 100 people came out to help with the garden.
RUMBELOW1: “Overall this was a volunteer project, volunteer-led project. It’s been amazing just saying, ‘Patty Manning’ – ya know pretty much opens doors and gets everybody to say, ‘yes, how can I help.’” (0:13)
A ribbon cutting ceremony takes place at 2p.m. and will be followed by a reception at the Ritchey at 4 p.m.

The Food Pantry of Jeff Davis County is looking for donations of cereal boxes.
As part of the food drive, the Jeff Davis County Democratic Party will match donations of cereal at $5 for every box up to $500 to help the food pantry purchase milk and other items.
You can deliver boxes of cereal to the following locations: In Fort Davis, you can drop off donations at 205 Circle D Ave. In Valentine, the drop-off location is 114 Texas Avenue, and in the DMR, you can 103 Yellow Knife Trail
Donations must be made by Saturday, Dec. 6.

At the end of week, the Family Crisis Center of the Big Bend is hosting an open house.
The nonprofit is welcoming the public to tour their facilities, meet staff and learn more about the services the group provides to a five-county area.
The open house is Friday, Dec. 5 from 4 to 6 p.m. The event will feature guest speaker Rose Luna, the CEO of the Texas Association Against Sexual Assault.
The Family Crisis Center of the Big Bend is located at 402 E. Gallego Ave.

Also on this weekend, Marfa Studio of Arts invites the public to an art show, featuring the work of artists teaching this year at Marfa Elementary.
The opening reception for the show is Saturday, Dec. 6, from 4 to 7 p.m. See works by local artists Chelsea Quinlan, Katrina Jane, Marcy Rodriguez, Suzanne McCleod, Katy Baldock and Gary Jean Dorey.
The work will be exhibited until January 2026.

The last guided hike up Hancock Hill of 2025 is this weekend.
The hike is led by professionals who provide insights to the land and wildlife in the region – all while taking in stunning views of the Big Bend landscape.
The last hike of the season is Saturday, Dec. 6 – and will be led by Jesse Kelsch, an assistant professor of geology at Sul Ross. She’ll talk about the region and geologic time.
The hike begins at 9 a.m., and will take roughly two hours. It’s free and open to the public.
Reservations are required and can be made online at sulross.edu/guided-hikes.

La Despensa de Alimentos del Condado de Jeff Davis busca donaciones de cajas de cereal.

A finales de semana, el Centro de Crisis Familiar de Big Bend organizará una jornada de puertas abiertas.
La organización sin fines de lucro invita al público a recorrer sus instalaciones, conocer al personal y obtener más información sobre los servicios que ofrece en un área de cinco condados.
