On Tuesday, Dec. 2, Council members are set to recognize and honor Chief of Police Darrell Losoya for his 31 years of service to the city of Alpine. They’ll also welcome and give the oath of office to the next chief of police, Kirk Caughman.

Registration is now open for next year’s Water in the Desert conference.
The three-day event focuses on the future of water in the Chihuahuan Desert of West Texas.
Join landowners, scientists, policymakers, and community leaders from Feb. 11th through the 13th at Sul Ross State University. This year’s conference will feature sessions, field trips, and opportunities to connect with experts across the region.

This week, from Thursday, Dec. 4 to Saturday Dec. 6, Historic Alpine invites the public to celebrate one of Alpine’s most cherished traditions — Christmas in Alpine.
The three-day event will feature holiday treats, shopping, festive neighborhood gatherings and a performance by the Big Bend Community Chorale and Sul Ross University Chorus.
This year’s celebration begins on Thursday, Dec. 4 with Starlight Shopping and the Wassail Crawl in Alpine’s Downtown Shopping District from 4 to 7:00 pm. Local businesses will stay open late with special holiday offerings and treats while live music fills the streets.
Then on Friday, the community will gather for a Christmas stroll that will take attendees through three of Alpine’s most historic institutions: The First Baptist Church, the historic schoolhouse and the First United Methodist Church.

The local nonprofit Friends of Big Bend Ranch State Park is holding a raffle for a chance to get an early look at the new Chinati Mountains State Natural Area.
The new state park stretches across roughly 39,000 acres of Big Bend country, but doesn’t officially open until 2032.
The nonprofit is welcoming a select group of raffle winners to hike the park on the first day of the new year.
They’re selling raffle tickets now until Dec. 13. Then starting on Dec. 14, Big Bend Ranch State Park employees will be drawing one winner per day, ending on Christmas Day.
Each person drawn will be allowed to bring one guest.

Head to the Jeff Davis County Library for their latest exhibit, Mexican Fiestas.
The photography show presents a stunning chronicle of the historic and diverse traditions of Mexican festivals as experienced through the lens of Houston photographer Geoff Winningham. His work highlights how these celebrations unite communities through centuries-old traditions of art, music, dance and worship.
Mexican Fiestas is on display now through Dec. 12.

Next week, officials with the city of Alpine and Brewster County will hold a joint workshop, where they’re set to discuss the future of emergency medical services in the region.
According to an agenda for the meeting, officials will consider – among other things – the current coordination on emergency services, overall needs and how the city and county can better work together.
The city-county workshop is Tuesday, Dec. 9, beginning at 9:30 a.m. at the county courthouse.

El evento de tres días incluirá dulces navideños, compras, reuniones festivas en el vecindario y una actuación del Coro Comunitario de Big Bend y el Coro de la Universidad Sul Ross.
La celebración de este año comienza el jueves 4 de diciembre con Starlight Shopping y el Wassail Crawl en el Distrito Comercial del Centro de Alpine, de 4:00 p. m. a 7:00 p. m. Los negocios locales permanecerán abiertos hasta tarde con ofertas y dulces navideños especiales, mientras que la música en vivo inunda las calles.
El viernes, la comunidad se reunirá para un paseo navideño que llevará a los asistentes por tres de las instituciones más históricas de Alpine: la Primera Iglesia Bautista, la escuela histórica y la Primera Iglesia Metodista Unida.

La organización local sin fines de lucro Friends of Big Bend Ranch State Park está realizando un sorteo para tener la oportunidad de obtener una vista anticipada de la nueva Área Natural Estatal de las Montañas Chinati.
El nuevo parque estatal se extiende por aproximadamente 16.800 hectáreas de la zona de Big Bend, pero no abrirá oficialmente hasta 2032.
La organización sin fines de lucro invita a un selecto grupo de ganadores de la rifa a recorrer el parque el primer día del año nuevo.
Se están vendiendo boletos de la rifa hasta el 13 de diciembre. A partir del 14 de diciembre, los empleados del Parque Estatal Big Bend Ranch sortearán un ganador por día, hasta el día de Navidad.

Según la agenda de la reunión, los funcionarios considerarán, entre otros temas, la coordinación actual de los servicios de emergencia, las necesidades generales y cómo la ciudad y el condado pueden colaborar mejor.
El taller entre la ciudad y el condado tendrá lugar el martes 9 de diciembre a las 9:30 a. m. en el juzgado del condado.
