After what forecasters say was the coldest day of the season so far in the Big Bend yesterday (SUNDAY), things will begin to warm a little today (MONDAY).

According to the National Weather Service in Midland, afternoon highs today (MONDAY) will largely be in the 60s. The Alpine area is expected to see a high close to 69, Fort Stockton will be near 67 and much of the Permian Basin will remain in the 50s.

Tomorrow (TUESDAY), Alpine City Council holds its next meeting.

On Tuesday, Dec. 2, Council members are set to recognize and honor Chief of Police Darrell Losoya for his 31 years of service to the city of Alpine. They’ll also welcome and give the oath of office to the next chief of police, Kirk Caughman. 

The council will also conduct interviews for the city manager position and discuss next steps in the hiring process. That part of the meeting happens in executive session and is not open to the public. 

The council meeting starts at 5:30. The council chambers are located at 803 W. Holland Avenue.

On Friday, Alpine Memorial Funeral Home will hold their annual Service of Remembrance, an evening for reflection and community.

The service will take place at the Granada Theater in Alpine from 5 to 7 p.m. It will be following by dinner and an evening of music.

The Food Pantry of Jeff Davis County is looking for donations of cereal boxes. 


As part of the food drive, the Jeff Davis County Democratic Party will match donations of cereal at $5 for every box up to $500 to help the food pantry purchase milk and other items.

You can deliver boxes of cereal to the following locations: In Fort Davis, you can drop off donations at 205 Circle D Ave. In Valentine, the drop-off location is 114 Texas Avenue, and in the DMR, you can 103 Yellow Knife Trail 

Donations must be made by Saturday, Dec. 6.

On Friday, head to the Old School House for a wintertime celebration.

Alpine Community Projects invites the public to visit with Santa and enjoy some hot cocoa. Afterwards, stroll over to the United Methodist Church for the Big Bend Chorale Christmas, directed by Andrew Alegria. 

The holiday kickoff at the Old School House begins at 5:30 p.m. on Friday, Dec. 5 and the Christmas concert starts at 7:30 p.m.

Next week, officials with the city of Alpine and Brewster County will hold a joint workshop, where they’re set to discuss the future of emergency medical services in the region. 

According to an agenda for the meeting, officials will consider – among other things – the current coordination on emergency services, overall needs and how the city and county can better work together. 

County officials have decided not to renew the contract with the current EMS provider – that ends in May 2026.

The city-county workshop is Tuesday, Dec. 9, beginning at  9:30 a.m. at the county courthouse.
