The Big Bend Open Road Race starts tomorrow (WEDNESDAY) and over the next few days will see drivers from across the state and beyond race down Highway 285, between Fort Stockton and Sanderson.
Organizers say the open-road race is the “most challenging” in the world.
The Texas Department of Transportation has closed that stretch of highway for the event – from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m.

Tomorrow (WEDNESDAY), the music program at Sul Ross State University will host an evening of classical music, featuring pianist Jae-Eun Baek and guitarist Stephen Krishnan.
The concert is tomorrow night (WEDNESDAY) at 7:30 p.m., and will be held in the Studio Theater of the Francois Fine Arts Building on the campus in Alpine.
Admission is free and open to the public.

At this week’s Alpine ISD board of trustees meeting, officials are set to talk about the project for Manuel Payne field at Kokernot Park.
The district and the city of Alpine are considering making upgrades to the field to improve youth recreation facilities in Alpine. The district held a public meeting about the project just last month.
According to Alpine ISD superintendent Michelle Rinehart, if improved, the district could return to using the field for its middle school and high school softball teams. And it could also become the home of future softball tournaments and other events for the city.
The board of trustees will also discuss deferred maintenance planning, and receive a district update along with an enrollment report from superintendent Rinehart.
The meeting takes place Wednesday, Oct. 15 at 5:30 p.m. at the district’s administrative building.

Sul Ross’ theatre department will kick off its season next week with a performance of the dark comedy “True West.”
The story’s set in California’s San Gabriel Valley, and explores the tense relationship between two brothers working toward the American Dream.
The production opens Friday, Oct. 24, and runs through Nov. 9 with performances on Fridays and Saturdays at 7:30 p.m. and Sundays at 2 p.m.
Tickets are $15 for general admission and $10 for seniors 65 and older. U.S. veterans and university students, faculty and staff receive free admission.
“True West” contains strong language and depictions of physical violence and is not recommended for children under 12.

Next month, an indigenous nonprofit will host a reburial ceremony in Presidio for seven people who once called the Presidio-Ojinaga area their home – it’s an area known as “La Junta”
Throughout the years, the remains of Indigenous people were taken by archaeologists and private collectors to be studied and held in institutions. In recent years, there has been an effort to repatriate those remains to their rightful resting place.
The historic event will be held Saturday, November 1, at 9:00 a.m. at the Cementerio del Barrio de los Lipanes in Presidio. A community reception will follow at the American Legion.

In November, the local group Alpine Community Projects will host a community conversation on elder care in the region and how to provide for the Big Bend’s aging population.
The meeting is Nov. 6 at 5:30 p.m. at the old schoolhouse, located at 205 E. Sul Ross Ave.

La junta directiva también discutirá la planificación del mantenimiento diferido y recibirá una actualización del distrito junto con un informe de inscripción del superintendente Rinehart.
La reunión se llevará a cabo el miércoles 15 de octubre a las 5:30 p.m. en el edificio administrativo del distrito.

El departamento de teatro de Sul Ross iniciará su temporada la próxima semana con una presentación de la comedia negra “True West”.
La historia se desarrolla en el Valle de San Gabriel de California y explora la tensa relación entre dos hermanos que trabajan para alcanzar el sueño americano.
La producción se inaugura el viernes 24 de octubre y permanecerá abierta hasta el 9 de noviembre con funciones los viernes y sábados a las 7:30 y los domingos a las 2:00.
Las entradas cuestan $15 para la entrada general y $10 para personas mayores de 65 años. Los veteranos estadounidenses y estudiantes, profesores y personal universitario entran gratis.
“True West” contiene lenguaje fuerte y representaciones de violencia física y no se recomienda para niños menores de 12 años.

El próximo mes, una organización indígena sin fines de lucro organizará una ceremonia de entierro en Presidio para siete personas que alguna vez llamaron al área de Presidio-Ojinaga su hogar, un área conocida como “La Junta”.
A lo largo de los años, arqueólogos y coleccionistas privados se han llevado restos de pueblos indígenas para estudiarlos y conservarlos en instituciones. En los últimos años, se ha trabajado para repatriarlos a su legítimo lugar de descanso.
El evento histórico se llevará a cabo el sábado 1 de noviembre a las 9:00 a. m. en el Cementerio del Barrio de los Lipanes en Presidio. Posteriormente, se ofrecerá una recepción comunitaria en la Legión Americana.
