Tomorrow (TUESDAY), Brewster County commissioners and Alpine city council members will hold a special joint-meeting to discuss several topics around dark skies and other opportunities for collaboration.
Part of the meeting’s agenda includes a review of dark skies lighting regulations for the city and county, as well as a discussion on re-branding the city of Alpine and Brewster County as the “Dark Sky Capital of Texas.”
The city and county officials meet Tuesday, September 30 at 5:30 p.m. at the county courthouse.

Beginning this week, rugged stretches of Big Bend National Park will close as part of an effort to protect native desert bighorn sheep.
Those efforts will see the park remove the bighorns’ biggest threat: Aoudads, a nonnative species that competes with bighorns for food and water and threatens the park’s ecology.
The process to remove aoudads, also known as Barbary sheep, starts Oct. 3 at Mesa de Anguila. Then over the weekend, Deadhorse Mountains, Dagger Flat Road and Old Ore Road will all be closed as the park continues the annual effort to reduce the amount of Barbary sheep in the park.
According to the park, aoudads have established a “foothold” in the region. And as their population has grown, the non-native species has started to compete with the native desert bighorn sheep for resources and is considered an overall threat to the biodiversity of the region.

On Nov. 4, Texas voters will weigh in on 17 constitutional amendments. The propositions range from property tax cuts and water infrastructure funding to bail reform.
Ahead of the election, a local group is encouraging people to register to vote.
They’ll be set up at the Alpine Post Office on Wednesday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. And next week, on Monday, Oct. 6, they’ll be at the Morgan University Center at Sul Ross.
The group will also hold registration events in Marfa and in Terlingua. They’ll be at the Terlingua post office on Thursday from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. and the Marfa post office on Friday from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.
The last day to register to vote is Oct. 6. Early voting begins Oct. 20.

Alpine ISD is inviting the public to recommend a new name for the Alpine High School gym.
According to the district, the renaming process will be accompanied by $160,000 worth of renovations. The Wilson-Stice Court, located within the gym, will retain its name and this renaming project is intended for the gym as a whole.
The district is looking for recommendations honoring people who have made significant contributions to public education and have been standout role models for students.

This weekend, there will be a benefit lunch for Mari Cervantes at the American Legion in Alpine.
Brisket will be sold, and each plate will be $15. Tickets will be available at the door.
The benefit lunch happens Saturday, October 4 from noon to 4 p.m., or until food runs out.

The Alpine Public Library is currently hosting a “mask competition” fundraiser. There are no rules and you can pick up a mask to decorate, free of charge, at the library all this month.
The masks can be decorated any way you want and with anything you want. The library asks you return your designed mask by November 1 to the library, where they will be on display and up for bids at the library’s silent auction.

Mañana (MARTES), los comisionados del Condado de Brewster y los miembros del consejo municipal de Alpine celebrarán una reunión conjunta especial para tratar diversos temas relacionados con los cielos oscuros y otras oportunidades de colaboración.

A partir de esta semana, se cerrarán tramos escarpados del Parque Nacional Big Bend como parte de un esfuerzo para proteger a los borregos cimarrones del desierto.
Estos esfuerzos permitirán al parque eliminar la mayor amenaza para los borregos cimarrones: los aoudads, una especie no nativa que compite con los borregos cimarrones por alimento y agua y amenaza la ecología del parque.
El proceso para eliminar a los aoudads, también conocidos como borregos de Berbería, comienza el 3 de octubre en Mesa de Anguila. Posteriormente, durante el fin de semana, se cerrarán las montañas Deadhorse, Dagger Flat Road y Old Ore Road, mientras el parque continúa con el esfuerzo anual para reducir la cantidad de borregos cimarrones en el parque.
Según el parque, los aoudads se han establecido en la región. Y a medida que su población ha crecido, esta especie no nativa ha comenzado a competir con los borregos cimarrones del desierto por los recursos y se considera una amenaza general para la biodiversidad de la región.

El 4 de noviembre, los votantes de Texas opinarán sobre 17 enmiendas constitucionales. Las propuestas abarcan desde recortes al impuesto predial y financiación de infraestructura hídrica hasta la reforma del sistema de fianzas.
Antes de las elecciones, un grupo local anima a la gente a registrarse para votar.
Estarán presentes en la oficina de correos de Alpine el miércoles de 10:00 a. m. a 2:00 p. m. Y la próxima semana, el lunes 6 de octubre, estarán en el Centro Universitario Morgan en Sul Ross.
El grupo también realizará eventos de registro en Marfa y Terlingua. Estarán en la oficina de correos de Terlingua el jueves de 11:00 a. m. a 4:00 p. m. y en la oficina de correos de Marfa el viernes de 11:00 a. m. a 2:00 p. m.
El último día para registrarse para votar es el 6 de octubre. La votación anticipada comienza el 20 de octubre.

El Distrito Escolar Independiente de Alpine invita al público a recomendar un nuevo nombre para el gimnasio de la Escuela Secundaria Alpine.
Según el distrito, el proceso de cambio de nombre incluirá renovaciones por un valor de $160,000. La Cancha Wilson-Stice, ubicada dentro del gimnasio, conservará su nombre y este proyecto de cambio de nombre se aplicará a todo el gimnasio.
El distrito busca recomendaciones para honrar a personas que han hecho contribuciones significativas a la educación pública y han sido ejemplos destacados para los estudiantes.

La Biblioteca Pública de Alpine está organizando un concurso de mascaras para recaudar fondos. No hay reglas y puede recoger una mascara para decorar, gratis, en la biblioteca durante todo este mes.
Las mascara se puede decorar como quiera y con lo que quiera. La biblioteca pide que devuelvan antes del 1ro de noviembre, donde se exhibirá y se podrá poner en la subasta silenciosa.
