Tomorrow (TUESDAY), Brewster County commissioners and Alpine city council members will hold a special joint-meeting to discuss several topics around dark skies and other opportunities for collaboration.  

Part of the meeting’s agenda includes a review of dark skies lighting regulations for the city and county, as well as a discussion on re-branding the city of Alpine and Brewster County as the “Dark Sky Capital of Texas.”

The city and county officials meet Tuesday, September 30 at 5:30 p.m. at the county courthouse.

This week, the 4th-annual Big Bend Bluegrass Festival will bring the tradition of bluegrass and other American-roots music to the Big Bend.

Taking place at the Alpine Civic Center, the event encourages the preservation and enjoyment of the music style with free workshops and live performances. 

The two-day event starts Friday, October 3 and will feature artists like the Larry Stephenson Band and Purple Hulls.

This weekend, after a 30-year hiatus, the Moon & Tunes music festival returns to Fort Davis. 

The lineup for the festival’s comeback includes Del Rio’s William Beckmann and Jason Boland, among others. 

The festival takes place October 3 and 4 at the High Frontier.

In October, Sul Ross State University will continue its schedule of guided hikes up Hancock Hill.

The series of hikes are led by professionals who will take you up to the hill, and along the way will provide insights to the land and wildlife in the region.

The next hike of the season is Saturday, October 11. It will be led by Kevin Urbanczyk who will talk about water resources

All events begin at 9 a.m., and take roughly two hours. The hikes are free and open to the public.

Next month, the college of education at Sul Ross presents a lecture with Ashlie Crosson, the 2025 national teacher of the year.

The event – part of the Poindexter Lecture Series – will be Monday, October 20 from 4:30 to 6:00 p.m. at the Espino Center.

Later this fall, Marathon Public Library will host a grand opening celebration for its new building.

The new space, which is already open to the public, has been an effort years in the making, and  part of the new expansion includes a community room, areas for infants, children and teens, an outdoor garden and expanded stacks for the library’s collections. 

Another part of the renovation will see the nearby adobe schoolhouse–the first-one built in Brewster County–restored into a history museum. 
The grand opening celebration will be November 6.
