Gary Eugene Morton died on August 25 with his wife and children by his side. He was 61.
Gary was born in Alpine, but attended Valentine ISD. From a young age, he had a desire to drive a truck, like his father and many others in his small town. He applied for his commercial drivers license at the age of 16 to support his young family. The CDL was issued to him, only later to have the State of Texas revoke it until he was 18.
Gary – who also went by “Tall Boy” – soon hit the open road where he was given the handle “Poco Loco,” and made many friends. He was known for having the cleanest, shiniest trucks on the road. After logging millions of miles on the road by 2021, Gary had heart surgery. He followed his cardiologist’s orders and lost 80 pounds with diet and riding a bike several miles a day to regain his health and his medical certification to drive a truck again.
He was a devoted husband and Pop, he cared for the elderly and helped others in his community with odd jobs. He was the bellringer at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Valentine and kept God’s word even closer to his heart. Gary was a big teddy bear who had no enemies and never hurt a fly.
Gary is survived by his wife Lisa, three children, daughters and two grandchildren.
A Rosary mass for Gary will be held at 7 p.m. on Friday, October 3 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Valentine. A funeral mass will be held the following day at 11 a.m. with a private burial for the family at a later date. Lunch will be served at the Valentine Community Complex at 100 Bell Street.
In lieu of flowers, please donate to the Valentine Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Gary’s name or to an animal rescue.

The 5th Street Gallery presents “Brushes and Knives” – an exhibit of new paintings by Carol Fairlie, which opens tomorrow (FRIDAY).
The event will be from 5 to 7 p.m., and drinks and hor d’oeuvres will be served.

This weekend, celebrate National Public Lands day by cleaning up the most iconic pockets of Big Bend Ranch State Park.
On Saturday, September 27 from 10 a.m. to noon, head to the park as staff and volunteers clean up a portion of River Road and some of the most popular trails in the park.

Next week, Brewster County commissioners and Alpine city council members will hold a special joint-meeting to discuss several topics around dark skies and other opportunities for collaboration.
Part of the agenda includes a review of dark skies lighting regulations for the city and county, and there will also be a discussion over re-branding the city of Alpine and Brewster County as the “Dark Sky Capital of Texas.”

The meeting is Tuesday, September 30 at 5:30 p.m. at the county courthouse.

Next month, the Texas Wildlife Association will host a fundraiser to help in the organization’s mission to conserve Texas’ wildlife,natural resources and hunting heritage.
The fundraiser takes place October 17 at the Granada theatre in Alpine with dinner, drinks, raffle prizes, and a live auction.
The event’s guest speaker is Matt Hewitt from Borderlands Research Institute.

Gary Eugene Morton falleció el 25 de agosto acompañado de su esposa e hijos. Tenía 61 años.
Gary nació en Alpine, pero estudió en el Distrito Escolar Independiente de Valentine. Desde pequeño, anhelaba conducir un camión, como su padre y muchos otros en su pequeño pueblo. Solicitó su licencia de conducir comercial a los 16 años para mantener a su joven familia. La licencia le fue otorgada, pero el estado de Texas la revocó hasta que cumplió 18 años.
Gary, también conocido como “Tall Boy”, pronto se lanzó a la carretera, donde le dieron el apodo de “Poco Loco” e hizo muchos amigos. Era conocido por tener los camiones más limpios y relucientes de la carretera. Tras recorrer millones de kilómetros en EL 2021, Gary se sometió a una cirugía de corazón. Siguió las indicaciones de su cardiólogo y perdió 36 kilos con dieta y recorriendo varios kilómetros en bicicleta al día para recuperar su salud y obtener su certificación médica para conducir un camión.
Fue un esposo y padre devoto, cuidaba de los ancianos y ayudaba a otros en su comunidad con trabajos ocasionales. Era el campanero de la Iglesia Católica del Sagrado Corazón en Valentine y guardaba la palabra de Dios aún más cerca de su corazón. Gary era un gran oso de peluche que no tenía enemigos y jamás mataba ni una mosca.
A Gary le sobreviven su esposa Lisa, tres hijos, hijas y dos nietos.
Se celebrará una misa del Rosario por Gary a las 7 p. m. el viernes 3 de octubre en la Iglesia Católica del Sagrado Corazón en Valentine. La misa funeral se celebrará al día siguiente a las 11 a. m. y el entierro privado para la familia se realizará posteriormente. El almuerzo se servirá en el Complejo Comunitario Valentine, ubicado en 100 Bell Street.
En lugar de flores, por favor, done a la Iglesia Católica del Sagrado Corazón de Valentine en nombre de Gary o a una organización de rescate de animales.

Este fin de semana, celebre el Día Nacional de las Tierras Públicas limpiando los rincones más emblemáticos del Parque Estatal Big Bend Ranch.
